Woody species diversity, soil macrofauna abundance, and soil organic carbon stock potentials of homegarden agroforestry practice in Habru district, North Wollo, Ethiopia

open access: yesDiscover Environment
Agroforestry, which integrates trees into farming systems, enhances resource use efficiency and contributes to climate change mitigation. While woody species diversity has been studied in Southern Ethiopia, data from Northern regions, particularly the ...

Alpine flora of Kashmir Himalaya: floristic assessment, life history traits and threat status

open access: yesNordic Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Alpine ecosystems in the Himalaya are considered to be at a higher risk to anthropogenic global change drivers. The Kashmir Himalaya, located in the north‐western side of the Himalayan biodiversity hotspot, harbors a diverse alpine flora, which remains systematically little investigated.

The hunt for Scabiosa trenta Hacq: how the pursuit of a phantom ignited a passion for botany and mountaineering

open access: yesNordic Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Scabiosa trenta Hacq. was first described in 1782 by Balthasar Hacquet, with its specific epithet referring to the Trenta Valley in Slovenia. Since then, S. trenta has been the focus of numerous mountaineering and botanical expeditions, particularly by the alpinist Julius Kugy during the Golden Age of Alpinism, a period in the second half of 19th ...

Dicrananthera hedyotidea C. Presl. (Melastomataceae) in Maranhão state, Brazil: first record and ecological niche model of the species

open access: yesNordic Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Dicrananthera C. Presl. is a monospecific genus of the tribe Marcetieae, comprising perennial herbs typically occurring in areas adjacent to wetlands. The species exhibits a disjunct distribution, with confirmed records in both the Amazon and Atlantic Forest domains.

Isotopic insights into the dynamics of soil water pools along an elevation gradient [PDF]

open access: yesHydrology and Earth System Sciences
Recent intensive research on the soil–plant–atmosphere continuum has introduced novel methodological approaches. These include new in-situ extraction techniques and the application of stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in water enabling to trace water ...

Eriope barrinhae (Lamiaceae, Hyptidinae), a new montane species from northern Minas Gerais, Brazil

open access: yesNordic Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
In northern Minas Gerais, in the Monte Azul region, the Pico da Formosa mountain remains poorly explored botanically despite recent discoveries of new taxa. During fieldwork at the summit of this mountain, we discovered a distinctive population of Eriope that differs from all known species by a unique combination of morphological characters.

Foraging and movement flexibility shape seed dispersal by an arboreal primate in a modified landscape

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
As habitats change, the effectiveness of animal‐mediated seed dispersal increasingly depends on animal responses to altered structure and resources. With habitat loss and degradation accelerating across the tropics, understanding how dispersers' foraging behavior and movement influence seed removal and deposition is critical to promoting forest ...

Between birch and berries: seasonal dietary niche partitioning among sympatric alpine herbivorous birds

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Niche partitioning is important for the coexistence of closely related species, allowing species to reduce overlap in resource use despite shared ecological requirements. In alpine environments, harsh climatic conditions and low habitat complexity constrain opportunities for ecological segregation, making seasonal resource fluctuation especially ...
