Effects of human settlement and roads on diel activity patterns of elephants ( Loxodonta africana )

African Journal of Ecology, 2018
As the human footprint expands worldwide, people and wildlife are coming into greater contact, and areas of human activity may be simultaneously associated with risk and reward for animals.

Analyses of African elephant (Loxodonta africana) diet with various browse and pellet inclusion levels.

Zoo Biology, 2019
To more closely simulate the diet of free-ranging elephants, the diet of six (2.4) African elephants (Loxodonta africana) was altered to include more browse and less pelleted complete feed (5% total diet).

Plasma Preparation and Storage for African Elephants (Loxodonta africana)

Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, 2009
The use of plasma as a life-saving tool for neonatal African elephants (Loxodonta africana) that failed passive transfer of immunoglobulins is proposed. The methodology of blood sampling, plasma extraction, and plasma storage is described. Values for cellular component sedimentation and biochemical parameters of extracted plasma that was collected from

Defaecation by African elephants (Loxodonta africana africana (Blumenbach))

African Journal of Ecology, 1972
SummaryA study of defaecation in the African elephant was carried out at the Voi headquarters of the Tsavo (East) National Park. Four orphaned animals aged between 1 and 10 years were observed for 4 days and 3 nights. During the day the time and weight of each individual's defaecation was recorded while at night only the time of defaecation. Details of

Serum enzyme activities in the African elephant (Loxodonta africana)

Experientia, 1976
The serum activities of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alpha-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase and creatine phosphokinase have been measured in the African elephant. In general, the values were broadly comparable with those of man except that alanine aminotransferase was much lower and creatine phosphokinase higher.

PHEOCHROMOCYTOMA IN AN AGED FEMALE AFRICAN ELEPHANT (LOXODONTA AFRICANA)

Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, 2005
A 43 yr-old female African elephant (Loxodonta africana) collapsed acutely and died. Necropsy revealed an enlarged right adrenal medulla. Histologic appearance was typical of pheochromocytoma. Special stains and electron microscopy demonstrated chromaffin granules, suggesting that the tumor was derived from catecholamine secreting cells of the adrenal ...

Vocal communication in African Elephants (Loxodonta africana)

Zoo Biology, 2010
AbstractResearch on vocal communication in African elephants has increased in recent years, both in the wild and in captivity, providing an opportunity to present a comprehensive review of research related to their vocal behavior. Current data indicate that the vocal repertoire consists of perhaps nine acoustically distinct call types, “rumbles” being ...
