Space shuttle orbiter auxiliary power unit development challenges [PDF]

open access: yes, 1985
When the flying spacecraft was approved for development, a power unit for the hydraulic system had to be developed. Unlike other systems on the orbiter, there was no precedent in earlier spacecraft for a hydraulic system nor for the power unit to drive ...

PyFrac: A planar 3D hydraulic fracture simulator

open access: yes, 2020
Fluid driven fractures propagate in the upper earth crust either naturally or in response to engineered fluid injections. The quantitative prediction of their evolution is critical in order to better understand their dynamics as well as to optimize their

Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis of High-Speed Aerostatic Conical Bearing–Rotor System with Micro-Orifice Frictional Loss

open access: yesMachines
Aerostatic conical bearings with micro-orifices (ACBMOs) can simultaneously withstand both radial and axial external loads and have high power density. Nevertheless, due to the larger surface-to-volume ratio and length-to-diameter ratio of micro-orifices,

RF Magnetron Sputtered Tungsten Disulfide Films: Influence of Target Preparation, Deposition Parameters, and Storage Conditions on Thin Film Stoichiometry

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Sputtered WS2 films were investigated in terms of their S‐ and O‐concentration depending on deposition power and pre‐sputter time. Chemical and structural investigations were done using EDS, TEM, SEM, AFM, XRD. In general, 20 W films exhibit a wide variation in stoichiometry and structure whereas 80 W films demonstrate a higher S/W ratio than 20 W ...

The effects of material combination and surface roughness in lubricated silicon nitride/steel rolling contact fatigue [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Four kinds of commercially finished 12.7 min HIPed silicon nitride bearing balls with surface roughness values R-a ranging from 0.002 to 0.016 mum were tested using a four-ball rolling configuration.

Analysis of Thermal Elastohydronamic Lubrication of Inclined Double-roller Enveloping Hourglass Worm Drive

open access: yesJixie chuandong, 2018
To improve the lubrication performance,anti-scuffing capacity and efficiency of enveloping worm, the elastohydrodynamic lubrication( EHL) line contact model is established based on the research of meshing performance of inclined double-roller enveloping ...

Effect of Surface‐Lubricant Compatibility on Bubble Formation in Lubricant‐Infused Surfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Lubricant‐infused surfaces reduce drag partly through bubbles that form when lubricant depletes. Using laser‐textured steel infused with silicone oil, we show that microbubble nucleation occurs even on surfaces fully wetted by the lubricant, regardless of chemistry.

Dynamic and thermal analysis of high speed tapered roller bearings under combined loading [PDF]

open access: yes
The development of a computer program capable of predicting the thermal and kinetic performance of high-speed tapered roller bearings operating with fluid lubrication under applied axial, radial and moment loading (five degrees of freedom) is detailed ...

Characterising the friction and wear between the piston ring and cylinder liner based on acoustic emission analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
In this paper, an experimental investigation was carried out to evaluate the friction and wear between the cylinder liner and piston ring using acoustic emission (AE) technology.

Anti‐Slip Material‐Based Strategies and Approaches

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This review highlights the principle mechanisms of slipping at the microscale, linking contact mechanics with a friction behavior model for surface interfaces. Main strategies to develop anti‐slip properties to the surfaces are discussed alongside standardized testing approaches.
