Dash-Associated Spondylolysis Hypothesis

open access: yesSpine Surgery and Related Research, 2019
Introduction: In past biomechanical studies, repetitive motion of lumbar extension, rotation, or a combination of both, frequently seen in batting or pitching practice in baseball, shooting practice in soccer, and spiking practice in volleyball, have ...

Fixed and Fluid: The Two Faces of Gender Roles—A Combined Study of Activity Patterns and Burial Practices in the European Neolithic

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Biological Anthropology, Volume 189, Issue 2, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Objectives This study investigates gender roles in the European Neolithic by analyzing activity‐related skeletal changes (ARSCs) and burial practices at two Polgár microregion sites in Hungary: Polgár‐Ferenci‐hát (5300–5070 cal. bce) and Polgár‐Csőszhalom (4800–4650 cal. bce). Materials and Methods A total of 125 well‐preserved adult skeletons

The Implementation of Persistent Spinal Pain Syndrome (PSPS): Mechanism‐Based Recommendations

open access: yesPain Practice, Volume 26, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Background In 2021, the term persistent spinal pain syndrome (PSPS) was introduced. PSPS type 2 (PSPS‐T2) replaced the unsatisfactory term failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS). PSPS type 1 (PSPS‐T1) is a clinical picture of signs and symptoms of FBSS but without prior surgery. PSPS applies to any spinal level.

Significance of the Pars Interarticularis in the Cortical Bone Trajectory Screw Technique: An Insertional Torque Study [PDF]

open access: yesAsian Spine Journal, 2016
Study DesignRetrospective study.PurposeCortical bone trajectory (CBT), a more medial-to-lateral and shorter path than the traditional one for spinal fusion, is thought to be effective for severely degenerated vertebrae because screws are primarily ...

Age and Spinal Level as Predictors of Lumbar Disc Degeneration in Humans and Mice: A Comparative Analysis

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 8, Issue 4, December 2025.
Mouse models are commonly used to study IVD degeneration and related neurological conditions that especially impact elder population. However, how well mice replicate human pathology remains unclear. This study compared lumbar IVD degeneration patterns across age and spinal levels in humans and mice.

The Impact of the Ovine Annular Lesion Model on IVD Pathobiology and Utility of the Ovine Spinal Model in Patho‐Anatomical Studies: A Historical Perspective

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 8, Issue 4, December 2025.
The ovine annular rim‐lesion model of intervertebral disc degeneration of Osti and colleagues (1990) has evolved into a sophisticated mechanical destabilization large animal model of intervertebral disc degeneration over its 35 year history offering diverse musculoskeletal multi‐disciplinary investigations into the multifunctional complexity of this ...

Comprehensive Evaluation of Facet Joints Osteoarthritis Radiological Features on Lumbar CT: A Multitask Deep Learning Approach

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 8, Issue 3, September 2025.
To develop a multitask deep learning (DL) model for assessing the severity of five radiological features of facet joint osteoarthritis (FJOA) on lumbar spine CT and evaluate the performance of readers with DL assistance. ABSTRACT Background Accurately evaluating the radiological features of facet joint osteoarthritis (FJOA) may help to elucidate its ...

Lumbar HIVD Associated with Spondylolysis

open access: yesJournal of Korean Society of Spine Surgery, 2001
Study Design : This is a retrospective study determining the surgical result of lumbar HIVD associated with spondylolysis. Objectives : To analyze the incidence of lumbar HIVD associated with spondylolysis and to compare the results of open discectomy for lumbar HIVD associated with spondylolysis to simple lumbar HIVD.

Growing Old at Tombos: A View of Older Adults in an Ancient Egyptian‐Nubian Community

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Biological Anthropology, Volume 187, Issue 4, August 2025.
ABSTRACT Objectives The experiences of older adults in ancient communities are often overlooked in studies due to many factors, such as preservation, methodological issues, and less frequent mention in available texts. Materials and Methods This study combines community‐ and individual‐level data to explore life for older adults at the ancient Egyptian/

Glycolysis‐Derived Lactate Induces ACSL4 Expression and Lactylation to Activate Ferroptosis during Intervertebral Disc Degeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 21, June 5, 2025.
Glycolysis‐derived lactate activates nucleus pulposus cell ferroptosis via Histon H3K18la‐mediated ACSL4 transcription and ACSL4 lactylation and aggravate intervertebral disc degeneration. Inhibiting glycolysis via gene silencing or chemical intervention reduces the production of lactate and ameliorates ferroptosis activation and nucleus pulposus ...
