Aortic aneurysm management results through one year with a conformable neck sealing endograft and preemptive sac embolization with shape memory polymer devices

open access: yesJournal of Vascular Surgery Cases and Innovative Techniques
Management of abdominal aortic aneurysm includes reducing the incidence of endoleaks and promoting sac regression. Sac embolization has been shown to promote regression but alone may not adequately address type II endoleak risk.

Biomimetic Iridescent Skin: Robust Prototissues Spontaneously Assembled from Photonic Protocells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Uniform nanoparticles are induced to form arrays (photonic crystals) in the cores of biopolymer capsules, endowing these ‘protocells’ with structural color. These protocells are then assembled into large self‐standing objects, i.e., prototissues, with robust mechanical properties as well as iridescent optical properties.

Cardiopulmonary crisis caused by bronchial blocker malposition in a patient with aberrant tracheal anatomy: a case report

open access: yesBMC Anesthesiology
Background Double-lumen tubes (DLTs) and bronchial blockers (BBs) can be used to establish one-lung ventilation (OLV) for thoracic surgery. BBs are a good alternative when DLTs are not suitable or patients have difficult airways.

Implementation of Drug‐Induced Rhabdomyolysis and Acute Kidney Injury in Microphysiological System

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A modular Muscle–Kidney proximal tubule‐on‐a‐chip integrates 3D skeletal muscle and renal proximal tubule tissues to model drug‐induced rhabdomyolysis and acute kidney injury. The coculture system enables dynamic tissue interaction, functional contraction monitoring, and quantification of nephrotoxicity, revealing drug side effect‐induced metabolic ...

Individualized rotation of left double lumen endobronchial tube to improve placement success rate: a randomized controlled trial

open access: yesRespiratory Research
Background In conventional practice, the left double lumen tube (DLT) is rotated 90° counterclockwise when the endobronchial cuff passes glottis. Success rate upon the first attempt is

Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...

The Foundational Model of Anatomy Ontology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Anatomy is the structure of biological organisms. The term also denotes the scientific discipline devoted to the study of anatomical entities and the structural and developmental relations that obtain among these entities during the lifespan of an ...

Treatment of Gastrointestinal Bleeding in the Biliopancreatic Limb with Embolization in a Patient with Duodenal Switch Anatomy

open access: yesCase Reports in Gastroenterology
Introduction: Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS) is an uncommon type of bariatric surgery that can rarely lead to bleeding in the biliopancreatic limb. The altered anatomy poses significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Case

Unleashing the Power of Machine Learning in Nanomedicine Formulation Development

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A random forest machine learning model is able to make predictions on nanoparticle attributes of different nanomedicines (i.e. lipid nanoparticles, liposomes, or PLGA nanoparticles) based on microfluidic formulation parameters. Machine learning models are based on a database of nanoparticle formulations, and models are able to generate unique solutions
