Eu3+ ion as a luminescent structural probe for studying the biomineralization processes in sol-gel derived bioactive glasses: a preliminary study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In this thesis we describe the first steps in the development of a novel characterization method, meant to shed some new light on the biomineralization processes that take place on the surfaces of bioactive glasses when they are implanted into biological

Counterintuitive Fluorescence Blue Shift in Symmetry Breaking Dicationic Bis(indolium) with Two‐Photon Absorption Properties for NIR Living Cell Imaging

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Highly water‐soluble dicationic bis(indolium) dyes have been prepared, showing excellent two‐photon absorption and light emission. Their fluorescence behavior discloses an unusual increasing blue shift with increasing solvent polarity, which, in parallel, is beneficial for enhanced detection in biological media.

Water Permeates and Plasticizes Amorphous Carbon Dots: Unraveling the Inner Accessibility of the Nanoparticles by Glass Transition Studies

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The water permeability of amorphous carbon dots (CDs) is demonstrated by investigating their plasticization. Novel polyamide‐based and amorphous nanoparticles are synthesized by controlling their inner packing density. Water plasticization is evidenced by the decrease of the CDs glass transition temperature with increasing the hydration degree.

Opportunities of Semiconducting Oxide Nanostructures as Advanced Luminescent Materials in Photonics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The review discusses the challenges of wide and ultrawide bandgap semiconducting oxides as a suitable material platform for photonics. They offer great versatility in terms of tuning microstructure, native defects, doping, anisotropy, and micro‐ and nano‐structuring. The review focuses on their light emission, light‐confinement in optical cavities, and

The Viability of Organic Dyes in Luminescent Down-Shifting Layers for the Enhancement of Si Solar Cell Efficiency

open access: yes, 2020
The main energy losses in solar cells are related to spectral losses where high energy photons are not used efficiently, and energy is lost via thermalization which reduces the solar cell’s overall efficiency.

On the luminescence and absence of luminescence of F centers

open access: yesSolid State Communications, 1975
AbstractA model, proposed originally by Dexter, Klick and Russell, is used to explain the occurence or non-occurence of F-center luminescence in ionic crystals, in terms of a simple two-state configuration coordinate diagram. In this model, which works for all known cases, luminescence is quenched by a competing non-radiative process whenever the ...
