Luminous Infrared Galaxies in a Merging Sequence: ISO Observations [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1999
We report mid-infrared images of several luminous infrared galaxies (LIGs) taken with ISOCAM on the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). These LIGs were chosen to represent different phases of a merger sequence of galaxy-galaxy interaction with special emphasis on early/intermediate stages of merging.

The HST Large Programme on NGC 6752 ‐ V. Differences in luminosity and mass function among stellar populations

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, Volume 345, Issue 5, June 2024.
Abstract We exploit the astro‐photometric dataset of the multi‐epoch infrared parallel field of a Hubble Space Telescope Large Programme aimed at studying the faintest stars of the globular cluster NGC 6752 to determine the luminosity and mass functions of the multiple stellar populations of this cluster. Thanks to the measurement of proper motions and

Searching for Dark Galaxies with H I Detection from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) Survey

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series
We present a catalog of 142 dark galaxy candidates in a region covered by the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey. We start with 344 ALFALFA H i sources without optical counterparts and remove those that do not seem to have a dark galaxy origin. To

Heavy Elements and Electromagnetic Transients from Neutron Star Mergers

open access: yesAnnalen der Physik, Volume 536, Issue 2, February 2024.
Astro‐(physics) has made major leaps forward through the combined information provided by both gravitational waves and electromagnetic emission from the first detected neutron star merger event. This review provides an up‐to‐date overview of today's understanding of neutron star mergers and their electromagnetic emission and it discusses possible ...

H_2 emission arises outside photodissociation regions in ultra-luminous infrared galaxies

open access: yes, 2010
Ultra-luminous infrared galaxies are among the most luminous objects in the local universe and are thought to be powered by intense star formation. It has been shown that in these objects the rotational spectral lines of molecular hydrogen observed at ...

HST astrometry of the closest brown dwarfs‐II. Improved parameters and constraints on a third body

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, Volume 345, Issue 1, January 2024.
Abstract Located at less than two pc away, Luhman 16 AB (WISE J104915.57‐531906.1) is the closest pair of brown dwarfs and the third closest “stellar” system to Earth. An exoplanet candidate in the Luhman 16 binary system was reported in 2017 based on a weak astrometric signature in the analysis of 12 HST epochs.

Building on the Archives: Connecting the CN/CO Intensity Ratio with Global Galaxy Properties in Nearby U/LIRGs

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We use the CN/CO intensity ratio to obtain the dense gas fraction, f _dense , for a sample of 16 ultraluminous and luminous infrared (IR) galaxies and compare f _dense with a suite of global galaxy properties.

The differential magnification of high-redshift ultraluminous infrared galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
A class of extremely luminous high-redshift galaxies has recently been detected in unbiased submillimetre-wave surveys using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) camera at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope.

Comparing Ultraviolet and Infrared-Selected Starburst Galaxies in Dust Obscuration and Luminosity

open access: yes, 2010
We present samples of starburst galaxies that represent the extremes discovered with infrared and ultraviolet observations, including 25 Markarian galaxies, 23 ultraviolet luminous galaxies discovered with GALEX, and the 50 starburst galaxies having the ...
