Molecular Gas Depletion and Starbursts in Luminous Infrared Galaxy Mergers [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
Most luminous infrared galaxies (LIGs) are closely interacting/merging systems that are rich in molecular gas. Here we study the relationship between the stage of the galaxy-galaxy interactions, the molecular gas mass, and the star formation rate as ...

Searching for Dark Galaxies with H I Detection from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) Survey

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series
We present a catalog of 142 dark galaxy candidates in a region covered by the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey. We start with 344 ALFALFA H i sources without optical counterparts and remove those that do not seem to have a dark galaxy origin. To

The Accretion History of AGN: The Spectral Energy Distributions of X-Ray-luminous Active Galactic Nuclei

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from X-ray to far-infrared (FIR) wavelengths are presented for a sample of 1246 X-ray-luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs; L _0.5–10 keV > 10 ^43 erg s ^−1 ), with z _spec < 1.2, selected from Stripe 82X, COSMOS ...

A Spitzer study of interacting luminous and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2011
AbstractWe conducted a Spitzer Space Telescope survey of 28 Luminous (11 < log (LIR/L⊙) < 12, LIRGs) and Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies (log (LIR/L⊙) > 12, ULIRGs). Many of these galaxies are found in pairs or associations and are powered by either nuclear activity or star-formation (Sanders & Mirabel 1996).

ISO spectroscopy of star formation and active nuclei in the luminous infrared galaxy NGC 6240 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
We present Infrared Space Observatory mid- and far-infrared spectroscopy of the merging galaxy NGC 6240, an object presenting many aspects of importance for the role of star formation and AGN activity in (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies.

Near‐Infrared and Star‐forming Properties of Local Luminous Infrared Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2006
We use HST NICMOS continuum and Pa-alpha observations to study the near-infrared and star-formation properties of a representative sample of 30 local (d ~ 35-75Mpc) luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs, infrared 8-1000um luminosities of L_IR=11-11.9[Lsun]).

Optical Imaging of Very Luminous Infrared Galaxy Systems: Photometric Properties and Late Evolution [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
A sample of 19 low-redshift (0.03 < z < 0.07), very luminous infrared galaxy [VLIRG: 1011 L⊙ < L(8–1000 μm) < 1012 L⊙] systems (30 galaxies) has been imaged in B, V, and I using ALFOSC with the Nordic Optical Telescope.

GOALS-JWST: The Warm Molecular Outflows of the Merging Starburst Galaxy NGC 3256

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) integral-field spectrograph observations of NGC 3256, a local infrared-luminous late-stage merging system with two nuclei roughly 1 kpc apart, both of which have evidence of cold molecular outflows. Using JWST/

Resolved CO(1–0) Emission and Gas Properties in Luminous Dusty Star-forming Galaxies at z = 2–4

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
We present the results of a survey of CO(1−0) emission in 14 infrared luminous dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at 2 < z < 4 with the NSF’s Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array.

Molecular gas in luminous infrared galaxies

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1991
Radio observations of 60 bright IRAS galaxies with redshifts of 1500-25,000 km/sec are reported. Data obtained in the 1-0 line of CO using the 12-m NRAO radio telescope during 1985-1988 are presented in extensive tables, graphs, and line profiles and analyzed along with similar data on 29 less distant IRAS bright galaxies (Tinney et al., 1990).
