Pharmacokinetic (PK) models simplify biological complexity by dividing the body into interconnected compartments. The time course of the chemical's amount (or concentration) in each compartment is then expressed as a system of ordinary differential equations.

### What you need to know Groin lumps are a common presentation in primary care in both sexes. Hernias are possibly the commonest cause of a groin lump. A prospective study (54 patients) found that a strangulated hernia was misdiagnosed by general practitioners in a third of patients (17) and by admitting surgeons in 15% of patients (8).1 Timely ...

A 16-year-old male patient presented with 48-hour history of a painful swelling over the right sternoclavicular joint. He had recently returned from holiday in Turkey but gave no history of trauma. Palpation over the swelling was very tender and he was noted to be feverish at 38.2 ° C.

A 7-year-old boy was referred to hospital for assessment of a lump in the left temporal region. 6 weeks previously he had caught his head on a metal pole, sustaining a blow just above his left ear. There had been no loss of consciousness. His mother had noted a hard swelling in this area and had become concerned when it persisted unchanged following ...

Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) via optical fibers makes use of Rayleigh backscattering for the detection of acoustic waves that interact with the fiber along its entire length. The random nature of Rayleigh backscattering leads to nonuniform performance along the fiber and, occasionally, to complete signal fading.

Mass‐lumping or not mass‐lumping for eigenvalue problems
Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations, 2003AbstractIn this article we analyze the effect of mass‐lumping in the linear triangular finite element approximation of second‐order elliptic eigenvalue problems. We prove that the eigenvalue obtained by using mass‐lumping is always below the one obtained with exact integration.

Neck Swellings/Lumps: Lateral Neck Lumps
2010The majority of laterally placed neck lumps in children originate in lymph nosed. Cervical lymphadenopathy is very common in children and in the vast majority of children will be self limiting and benign. Clinicians must therefore be aware of the potential causes of lymph node enlargement in children and the indicators of serious pathology.
