A plan for the development of lunar astronomy

AIP Conference Proceedings, 1990
This is a report synthesizing discussions of the Astronomy/Astrophysics Definition Team at the Lunar Science Strategy Workshop for the Exploration and Development of the moon which was held at the NASA Johnson Space Center during August 15-16, 1989.

Lunar-based astronomy

2018
Space exploration and science go hand in hand. This is true for both robotic and manned missions. The advantage of missions that include astronauts is that they may be able to figure out how to repair something that stopped working, and they can modify the research itinerary if something unexpected of greater scientific interest is found.

A synthesis arrary for lunar submillimeter astronomy

AIP Conference Proceedings, 1990
This paper describes a system concept for a Synthsis Array for Lunar Submillimeter Astronomy (SALSA). It includes a brief discussion of the science objectives and the advantages of placing such an array on the moon, the system concept, and a top‐level discussion of the various subsystems, including the technology drivers associated with each.

The development and transmission of 248-day schemes for lunar motion in ancient astronomy

Archive for History of Exact Sciences, 1983
Babylonian, Greek and Indian texts concerning the mathematical approximation of the periodically varying speed of the lunar motion are systematized and interpreted. Predicting lunar motion was essentially a problem of approximating a periodic zigzag deviation table at a quadratic level. The Babylonians applied arithmetical reasoning.

ESA lunar study: Precursor astronomy missions to the Moon

Advances in Space Research, 1996
Abstract We give a summary of the areas identified by the ESA Lunar Study Steering Group for Scientific Exploration of the Moon in the ESA report “Mission to the Moon”. We discuss the possible phased approach for different scientific areas and some potential Precursor Astronomy Missions. We give a short status of current related ESA studies.

Engineering technologies for lunar-based astronomy

Advances in Space Research, 1994
Abstract Planning is underway to return to the Moon and explore Mars. Scientific outposts on the Moon will conduct a variety of exploration and experimentation, including astronomical observations. For lunar-based astronomy, we propose a progression in capability over time from small automated telescopes to a 16-meter reflector.

Structural Concepts for Lunar-Based Astronomy

Applied Mechanics Reviews, 1993
Lunar-based astronomy requires structures that provide the required stiffness, strength, and dimensional stability in the challenging lunar vacuum, thermal, radiation, micrometeorite, secondary ejecta, and dust environments. Materials used in the structures must be durable to provide extended service life.
