Deployable structures for a human lunar base

Acta Astronautica, 2006
Abstract The study Lunar exploration architecture—deployable structures for a lunar base was performed within the Alcatel Alenia Space “Lunar Exploration Architecture” study for the European Space Agency. The purpose of the study was to investigate bionic concepts applicable to deployable structures and to interpret the findings for possible ...

Explanation of Transient Lunar Phenomena based on Lunar Samples Studies

Nature, 1972
VARIOUS authors1–4 have shown that transient lunar phenomena (TLPs) are unlikely to arise from the excitation of luminescence in lunar rocks by such agents as the solar wind5, but the luminescent efficiency is many orders of magnitude too low for this emission to be detected even by “line fill” techniques6. To see an effect against the normal moonlight

International lunar base and lunar-based power system to supply Earth with electric power

Acta Astronautica, 1993
The people of Earth will need more than 20,000 billion watts (GWe) of electric power by 2050 for a high level of prosperity. Power needs in the 22nd Century could exceed 100,000 GWe. The Lunar Power System (LPS) can provide solar electric power to Earth at less cost than conventional terrestrial systems and with far less environmental impact.

A Lunar Base with Astronomical Observatory

41st International Conference on Environmental Systems, 2011
The concept of a Lunar Base for a crew of 10 (LB10), with an astronomical telescope is presented in this paper. The focus is on the architectural solutions for a lunar habitat with an astronomical observatory as well as site selection for the location and deployment of the settlement.

Architecture for a Mobile Lunar Base Using Lunar Materials

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2006
During the summers of 2004, and 2005, several studies were conducted in the Future Concepts Office at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) with assistance from summer faculty and student program participants to develop concepts and architectures for mobile lunar habitats.

Image-Based Lunar Surface Reconstruction

2009
For the creation of a realistic 3 meter-sized relief globe of the Moon, a detailed height map of the entire lunar surface is required. Available height measurements of the Moon's surface are too coarse by a factor of 15 for this purpose. The only publicly available source of high-resolution information are photographic images from the Lunar Orbiter IV ...

Lunar-based power systems

Acta Astronautica, 1988
Abstract Systems deployed from Earth can power a small, lunar research base. Their general characteristics and opportunities to use lunar resources are noted. However, much larger opportunities exit. A functionally superior version of the space solar power satellite system can be produced on the moon from local materials. This lunar power system (LPS)

Lunar-based astronomy

2018
Space exploration and science go hand in hand. This is true for both robotic and manned missions. The advantage of missions that include astronauts is that they may be able to figure out how to repair something that stopped working, and they can modify the research itinerary if something unexpected of greater scientific interest is found.
