AbstractThe exploration and development of space will require energy that is reliable, ubiquitous, and economical to produce. The international space station relies on photovoltaics to generate electricity stored in nickel-hydrogen batteries for powering the station during the “night”.

Lunar Soil Sampling and Testing
1962The limited real data available on the lunar environment is presented and several selected references are listed. Soil is usually tested for the properties that are expected to change and differ from one environment to another, whereas the properties that are more or less in equilibrium in any terrestrial environment are not tested.

Bearing strength of lunar soil
The Moon, 1971Bearing load vs penetration curves have been measured on a 1.3 g sample of lunar soil from the scoop of the Surveyor 3 soil mechanics surface sampler, using a circular indentor 2 mm in diameter. Measurements were made in an Earth laboratory, in air.

Behavior of Returned Lunar Soil in Vacuum
Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division, 1973TWO OEDOMETER AND THREE DIRECT SHEAR TESTS HAVE BEEN PERFORMED IN VACUUM ON A 200-G SAMPLE OF LUNAR SOIL FROM APOLLO 12 (SAMPLE NO. 12001, 119). IT HAD BEEN EXPECTED THAT THE VACUUM ENVIRONMENT AND CLEAN PARTICLE SURFACES WOULD CAUSE THE LUNAR SOIL TO HAVE A LOWER COMPRESSIBILITY AND A HIGHER SHEAR STRENGTH THAN THAT OF A GROUND BASALT SIMULANT IN AIR.

Multivariate Comparison of Lunar Soil Simulants
Journal of Aerospace Engineering, 2019AbstractSince 1960, when the first probes landed on the Moon, multiple specimens of lunar soil have been available for research.
