OBSTRUCTIVE LUNG DISEASE AND SLEEP
Medical Clinics of North America, 1996There is a significant interaction between obstructive lung disease and sleep--sleep is associated with clinical deterioration in obstructive lung disease, and vice versa. Knowledge of the pathophysiology of deterioration in obstructive lung disease during sleep is essential to the understanding of the management of this problem. Recent information has

Seretide for obstructive lung disease
Expert Opinion on Pharmacotherapy, 2002Seretide (Advair [North America], GlaxoSmithKline) is an inhaler combination formulation intended for the maintenance therapy of obstructive airways disease. Seretide was developed and made available initially as three multi-dose, dry powder inhaler formulations delivering 50 microg/puff of the long acting beta(2) agonist salmeterol and either 100, 250

Measuring exacerbations in obstructive lung disease
Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety, 2009AbstractPurposeUsing hospitalization always has been seen as a solid measurement for exacerbation in pharmacoepidemiology, but might lead to an underestimation of disease exacerbation because of a trend towards outpatient care. The aim of this study was to quantify the incidence of different exacerbation markers in obstructive lung disease and to ...

Obstructive lung disease like chronic bronchitis, asthma, pulmonary emphysema and their numerous combinations result from acute or chronic influence of noxious factors on the structures of the respiratory system. While in chronic bronchitis and asthma the conducting airways are affected, in pulmonary emphysema the integrity of the pulmonary parenchyma ...

An estimated 1 in 3,000 to 1 in 4,000 persons in the general population have a diagnosis of interstitial lung disease (ILD), and ILDs account for about 15% of all consultations for general pulmonologists. These diseases encompass a group of heterogeneous lung conditions characterized by diffuse involvement of the lung parenchyma and pulmonary ...

Capnogram Shape in Obstructive Lung Disease
Anesthesia & Analgesia, 2005Small, preliminary studies have suggested that capnograms of obstructive lung disease (OD) exhibit a characteristic shape and that this shape may be correlated to changes in forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1)). We evaluated the association between capnograms and spirometry from subjects with OD with normal and restrictive lung disease (RD ...

The major forms of obstructive lung disease are bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Asthma is characterized by a predominantly functional bronchial obstruction that is almost entirely reversible, at least at early stages; COPD exposes structural changes and deficits of the respiratory tract, including the lung tissue ...

Mechanical ventilation is often used in the setting of acute exacerbations of obstructive lung diseases like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These disorders are characterized by increased airway resistance secondary to bronchospasm and airway inflammation, collapse, and remodeling, often leading to inefficient exhalation and ...

Pulmonary Hemodynamics in Obstructive Lung Disease
Diseases of the Chest, 1968SUMMARY Various aspects of pulmonary hemodynamics were studied in 34 emphysema patients: (a) when the cardiac output was interpreted on the basis of each patient's age, the majority (85 per cent) showed either normal or high output, while the remainder (15 per cent) had a definitely low output.

Bronchial Collapse in Obstructive Lung Disease
Chest, 1981A 57-year-old man who died suddenly with severe bilateral mainstem bronchial collapse is described, and an alteration of the elastic tissue in the membranous portion of the bronchi is identified. The morphologic abnormalities, physiologic dynamics, and potential clinical consequences of such an alteration are discussed.
