Lung function in shock

The American Journal of Surgery, 1965
Abstract Ventilatory Mechanics . In acute hypovolemic shock the lung is more compliant if intermittently inflated. Resistance usually falls. After endotoxin administration the lung is less compliant and resistance rises. The effect is of short duration in both types of shock.

The metabolic function of the lung

Pharmaceutisch Weekblad Scientific Edition, 1987
Whereas the respiratory function of the lung has been studied extensively, there are only scarce data available concerning the lung's drug clearance capabilities in man. Its metabolic function in hormonally active agents has been documented in animals.

Evaluation of Lung Function

Annals of Internal Medicine, 1969
Abstract Evaluation of lung function requires evaluation of the function of the entire respiratory apparatus of which the lung is ordinarily the most critical part.

Lung Function in Divers

2013
Correct lung function is indispensible to perform work underwater. Thus, spirometric tests of lung function remain an important element in the process of selecting candidates for professional diving. Studies conducted in the population of divers identified the phenomenon called 'large lungs', which is often associated with spirometric indices ...

On the function and design of the lung

The Bulletin of Mathematical Biophysics, 1962
The purpose of this paper is to explore further the possibilities of a theory of structure (form) as determined by function. The paper is preliminary in nature and emphasis is placed more on the methodological approach than on immediately verifiable conclusions.

The lung function

1959
The main purpose of respiration is to increase the oxygen content and decrease the carbon dioxide content of the blood in the pulmonary circulation to levels suitable for metabolism in the body. This is done by breathing a gas mixture, usually the atmospheric one. In this paper I shall refer to the whole gas transport as the lung function. In reviewing

The Measurement of the Function of the Lungs

Diseases of the Chest, 1949
A method is given of measuring both the ventilatory and the diffusion functions of the lungs.

Lung Development, Lung Function, and Retinoids

New England Journal of Medicine, 2010
In this issue of the Journal, Checkley et al. report that, in a region with endemic vitamin A (retinol) deficiency, children whose mothers had received vitamin A supplementation before, during, and for 6 months after pregnancy had better lung function when they were tested at 9 to 11 years of age than children whose mothers had received beta carotene ...

Functional Evaluation of Lung Mitochondria

Chest, 1975
Activity of lung mitochondria was studied with a preparation of isolated mitochondria. This was correlated with responses of the isolated perfused lung as determined from surface fluorescence measurements and tissue redox couples. Lung mitochondria demonstrated substrate oxidation, respiratory control, and Caplus plus activation of alpha ...

Body Composition and Lung Function

2012
A growing body of evidence indicates that excess body weight is associated with a wide range of health conditions, including respiratory diseases. Cross-sectional studies have demonstrated an inverse relationship between body mass index and pulmonary function evaluated by spirometry.
