The epithelial cells and presumably endocrine cells of the bronchopulmonary tract are derived from the primitive esophagus. The endocrine cells of the bronchopulomanary tract therefore are of endodermal origin (34). Although earlier proposals favored a neural crest origin (29), experimental evidence failed to support this hypothesis (2,11,22).
