Mechanical Ventilation to Minimize Progression of Lung Injury in Acute Respiratory Failure.
American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 2017Mechanical ventilation is used to sustain life in patients with acute respiratory failure. A major concern in mechanically ventilated patients is the risk of ventilator-induced lung injury, which is partially prevented by lung-protective ventilation ...

Publisher Summary This chapter presents an overview of the concepts related to lung volumes. The measurement of the residual lung volume is necessary for measuring the pulmonary transfer factor by the single-breath carbon monoxide method and for obtaining total lung capacity whereby the emphysema pattern of impaired diffusion can be distinguished from

Emphysema is a chronic progressive condition of the lung characterized by an abnormal, permanent enlargement of air spaces distal to the terminal bronchioles accompanied by destruction of their walls, but without fibrosis. It is characterized by permanent impairment of the pulmonary terminal airway, hyperinflation of the parenchyma, and loss of elastic

Update on lung volume reduction
Journal of Surgical Research, 2004Lung-volume reduction surgery was a forgotten chapter in the history of thoracic surgery until it was reincarnated in a new form in 1994. The first report of 20 patients presented startlingly good results with minimal morbidity and mortality and interest in the procedure rapidly disseminated among the thoracic surgical community [1].

Lung volume for initiation of phonation
Journal of Applied Physiology, 1965The percent of vital capacity at which phonation is normally initiated was investigated. Thirty normal young male and thirty normal young female adults breathed oxygen in a closed circuit respirometer in a standing position. Vital capacity, expiratory reserve, tidal volume for breathing, and phonation volume were determined for each subject.
