Revisiting the History of Ornamental Aquaculture in Europe to Understand the Benefits and Drawbacks of Freshwater Fish Imports

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 17, Issue 2, March 2025.
ABSTRACT Ornamental aquaculture and fishkeeping are very popular with millions of enthusiasts worldwide. The number of newly imported fish species for ornamental purposes grew slowly from World War I until the 1980s. It then exponentially increased until now with more than 7900 species and a large number of scientifically undescribed morphotypes.

Enhancing tilapia intestinal health and growth: Response surface methodology‐optimized Schizochytrium limacinum and Lactococcus lactis supplementation

open access: yesJournal of the World Aquaculture Society, Volume 56, Issue 1, February 2025.
Abstract To improve the growth of genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT), the supplementation of Schizochytrium limacinum and Lactococcus lactis was sequentially optimized by a single‐factor method and central composite design combined with response surface methodology (CCD‐RSM) using a developed desirability function (Df) as the response value ...

Hyperostosis in Fishes: An Update With New Species Records

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, Volume 285, Issue 11, November 2024.
Hyperostosis is an enigmatic dimension of diversity in the anatomy of fishes. This excessive overgrowth of bone is natural in origin, occurs almost exclusively in marine fishes, is generally species‐specific, and becomes fully developed only in large individuals. We document hyperostosis in 35 families, 89 genera, and 153 species.

Expanded utilisation of microalgae in global aquafeeds

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 16, Issue 1, Page 6-33, January 2024.
Abstract Utilising novel ingredients in aquafeeds is necessary for the continued expansion and intensification of aquaculture production. Microalgae are utilised widely in aquaculture for a variety of purposes; as live feed for fish and shellfish larvae and juveniles, for the production of algae‐based meals and oils to replace marine derived raw ...

[Food habits of Lutjanus peru (Pisces:Lutjanidae) in the coasts of Guerrero, Mexico].

open access: yesRevista de biologia tropical, 2004
In this paper we describe the feeding habits of the Red snapper (Lutjanus peru) in the southern coast of Guerrero state, Mexico. This data could be relevant to local fisheries management. In total 385 full stomachs (206 from females and 179 from males) were collected monthly in 1993 and 1994, from commercial catches. Stomach contents were identified to

[Coexistence of Lutjanus peru and Lutjanus guttatus (Pisces: Lutjanidae) in the coast of Guerrero, México: association with the temporal variation of recruitment].

open access: yesRevista de biologia tropical, 2007
Monthly volumes of capture of Lutjanus peru and Lutjanus guttatus from the coast of Guerrero, Mexico, were analyzed considering eight annual cycles. Time-series, auto correlation, and cross-correlation analysis showed that monthly abundance of populations display unsystematic variations. The FiSAT software was used to obtain the recruitment patterns of

[Gonadal development and reproductive cycle of Lutjanus peru (Pisces: Lutjanidae) in Guerrero, Mexico].

open access: yesRevista de biologia tropical, 2004
In this paper, aspects of the reproductive biology of Lutjanus peru that can be used for the fishery management are described. Samples were taken monthly in 1993 and 1994, from commercial catches in the southern coast of Guerrero, Mexico. A global sex ratio of 1:1.37 (M:F) was found, but the sex ratio was highly variable each month.
