The Heart Block Hat‐Trick: A Case of Alternating First‐, Second‐, and Third‐Degree Heart Blocks

open access: yesCase Reports in Cardiology, Volume 2023, Issue 1, 2023., 2023
Idiopathic third‐degree atrioventricular (AV) block in a relatively young patient is an uncommon phenomenon. Even more rare is when the third‐degree heart block is alternating with the first‐ and second‐degree AV blocks. In this case, we present a 39‐year‐old man with varying degrees of AV block, alternating the third‐degree, second‐degree, and first ...

A Patient with SIADH, Urinary Retention, Constipation, and Bell’s Palsy following a Tick Bite

open access: yesCase Reports in Nephrology, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
Introduction. Lyme disease is the most common vector borne disease in the USA caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. Distribution of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. and Borrelia miyamotoi in Ixodes tick populations in Northern Germany, co‐infections with Rickettsiales and assessment of potential influencing factors

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 35, Issue 4, Page 595-606, December 2021., 2021
Three thousand one hundred and fifty individual Ixodes ricinus ticks from Northern Germany were screened for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and Borrelia miyamotoi, revealing an overall Borrelia prevalence of 30.6%. Analysis of co‐infections with Rickettsiales indicated a negative association between Borrelia and Anaplasma phagocytophilum infection ...

Pathogenesis of Borrelia burgdorferi and Babesia microti in TLR4‐Competent and TLR4‐dysfunctional C3H mice

open access: yesCellular Microbiology, Volume 23, Issue 9, September 2021., 2021
TLR4 stimulation in C3H/HeN mice by B. burgdorferi by unknown (indicated by a question mark) ligand(s) early in infection causes suppression of TLR2 expression. An increase in TLR2 expression in C3H/HeJ mice in the absence of a functional TLR4 possibly enhances signaling by Tri‐Acylated lipoproteins of colonized B.

Lyme Disease in the Era of COVID‐19: A Delayed Diagnosis and Risk for Complications

open access: yesCase Reports in Infectious Diseases, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
We describe a patient with fever and myalgia who did not have COVID‐19 but instead had Lyme disease. We propose that the co‐occurrence of COVID‐19 and Lyme disease during the spring of 2020 resulted in a delayed diagnosis of Lyme disease due to COVID‐19 pandemic‐related changes in healthcare workflow and diagnostic reasoning.
