The Vegan Villain Sets Out to The End of Summer: Functionalized Coatings as Biohybrid UV‐Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
This study introduces biohybrid coatings incorporating E. coli biomass expressing photoconvertible fluorescent proteins as UV‐A responsive elements. Upon irradiation at 400 nm, the coatings exhibit an irreversible fluorescence shift from green to red within 15 min. Notably, the photoconversion capability is retained after >1 year of storage.

Multiplexed Luminal Tissue Constructs with Reconfigurable Barriers for Dynamic Modeling of Multi‐Tissue Interactions

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This study describes the fabrication of arrays of luminal tissue constructs for 3D luminal tissue modeling. An oil or media‐filled reservoir between constructs serves as a liquid barrier or bridge to regulate communication between lumens within the array for modeling multi‐tissue interactions in vitro. Abstract Cell‐lined luminal structures are crucial

Characteristics of spatial use and importance of landscape features for recovering populations of Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx)

open access: yesActa Biologica Slovenica, 2020
Following the extirpation from Central and Southeastern Europe by the end of the 19th  century, Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) was reintroduced in the Alps and Dinarics.

Rapid Decentralized Prostate Cancer Risk Stratification by Portable Liquid Biopsy Analysis within a Clinical Biosensor Validation Framework

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In this work, we showcased two significant scientific advances in (i) developing a portable biosensor technology for rapid decentralized prostate cancer urinary biomarker testing and reporting, with superior performance to current clinical testing practice; and (ii) proposing a clinical validation framework (for our biosensor development) which can be ...

Non-invasive faecal sampling reveals spatial organization and improves measures of genetic diversity for the conservation assessment of territorial species: Caucasian lynx as a case species.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
The Caucasian lynx, Lynx lynx dinniki, has one of the southernmost distributions in the Eurasian lynx range, covering Anatolian Turkey, the Caucasus and Iran. Little is known about the biology and the genetic status of this subspecies.

Using questionnaire surveys and occupancy modelling to identify conservation priorities for the Critically Endangered Balkan lynx Lynx lynx balcanicus

open access: yesOryx, 2018
With an estimated < 50 adult individuals remaining, the Critically Endangered Balkan lynx Lynx lynx balcanicus is one of the rarest, most threatened and least-studied large carnivores.

Host‐Directed Antiviral Activity of SB2960 Through Selective Induction and Remodeling of Stress Granules

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Amid the ongoing threat of emerging viral pathogens, host‐directed antivirals offer a strategy to overcome viral mutation and drug resistance. SB2960, a small‐molecule inducer of stress granules (SGs), exhibits potent broad‐spectrum antiviral activity with minimal cytotoxicity.

Density estimations of the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in the Swiss Alps [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Use of photographic capture—recapture analyses to estimate abundance of species with distinctive natural marks has become an important tool for monitoring rare or cryptic species, or both.

Morphometric characteristics of free-ranging Eurasian lynx Lynx lynx in Switzerland and their suitability for age estimation

open access: yesWildlife Biology, 2018
Knowledge of the age of individual animals is crucial to assess population dynamics, disease epidemiology and to successfully implement conservation strategies.

Engineered GM1 Intersects Between Mitochondrial and Synaptic Pathways to Ameliorate ALS Pathology

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease driven by genetic and molecular disruptions affecting energy balance, protein homeostasis, and stress responses in nerve cells. Studies using human and rodent models identified convergent defects in mitochondria and synaptic function.
