Performance of hybrid diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (HDRS‐ISO 23698) methodology for assessment of sunscreen protection in the ALT‐SPF Consortium validation study

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cosmetic Science, Volume 47, Issue S1, Page 53-77, September 2025.
Hybrid Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (HDRS), now ISO 23698, demonstrated bioequivalence to gold‐standard SPF, UVA‐PF, and CW methods, achieving similar accuracy with improved variability after training. This new non‐erythemal approach enables safe non‐invasive sunscreen performance assessment on human skin, expanding possibilities for evaluating ...

The variability of in vivo sunscreen sun protection factor values

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cosmetic Science, Volume 47, Issue S1, Page 25-36, September 2025.
The SPF number of a sunscreen product is a critical component of the consumer purchase decision process. In vivo human SPF test results show considerable variability between testing laboratories and are likely greater than expected by public and regulatory bodies.
