Membership and Multiplicity among Very Low-Mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs in the Pleiades Cluster [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
We present near-infrared photometry and optical spectroscopy of very low-mass stars and brown dwarf candidates in the Pleiades open cluster. The membership status of these objects is assessed. Eight objects out of 45 appear to be non-members.

Ultrathin Li Metal Anodes: Quantitative Design Principles and Manufacturability Across Liquid and Solid‐State Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Ultrathin lithium metal anodes (≤15 µm) offer a promising route to high‐energy‐density batteries due to their high capacity and low potential. This review presents design principles for ultrathin Li, evaluates fabrication strategies, and discusses challenges in liquid and solid‐state cells.

The Orbital Eccentricity–Radius Relation for Planets Orbiting M Dwarfs

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
The orbital eccentricity–radius relation for small planets is indicative of the predominant dynamical sculpting processes during late-stage orbital evolution. Previous studies have shown that planets orbiting Sun-like stars exhibit an eccentricity–radius

Inhomogeneous structure in the chromospheres of dwarf M stars [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1991
Linear combinations of observed spectra of the H-alpha and Ca-II resonance and IR lines from the chromospheres of a quiet (Gl 1) and an active (Gl 735) dwarf-M star are compared with the corresponding spectra from a star of intermediate activity (Gl 887).

Are exoplanets orbiting m dwarfs extreme? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
I gave an invited talk at Extreme Solar Systems IV in REYKJAVIK, ICELAND. However, please note that all talks were officially "invited" according to the organizers.M dwarf stars have long spin-down timescales, long activity lifetimes and persistent ...

The Future of Research in Cognitive Robotics: Foundation Models or Developmental Cognitive Models?

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Research in cognitive robotics founded on principles of developmental psychology and enactive cognitive science would yield what we seek in autonomous robots: the ability to perceive its environment, learn from experience, anticipate the outcome of events, act to pursue goals, and adapt to changing circumstances without resorting to training with ...

Stellar Cycle and Evolution of Polar Spots in an M+WD Binary

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Stellar activity cycles reveal continuous relaxation and induction of magnetic fields. The activity cycle is typically traced through the observation of cyclic variations in total brightness or Ca H&K emission flux of stars, as well as cyclic variations ...

No Evidence for More Earth-sized Planets in the Habitable Zone of Kepler's M versus FGK Stars

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 2023
Reliable detections of Earth-sized planets in the habitable zone remain elusive in the Kepler sample, even for M dwarfs. The Kepler sample was once thought to contain a considerable number of M-dwarf stars ( T _eff < 4000 K), which hosted enough Earth ...

CARBON-TO-OXYGEN RATIOS IN M DWARFS AND SOLAR-TYPE STARS [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2016
ABSTRACT It has been suggested that high C/O ratios (>0.8) in circumstellar disks lead to the formation of carbon-dominated planets. Based on the expectation that elemental abundances in the stellar photospheres give the initial abundances in the circumstellar disks, the frequency distributions of C/O ratios of solar-type stars have ...

Substellar Companions to Main Sequence Stars: No Brown Dwarf Desert at Wide Separations

open access: yes, 2001
We use three field L and T dwarfs which were discovered to be wide companions to known stars by the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) to derive a preliminary brown dwarf companion frequency.
