The first comprehensive multilocus phylogeny of the lichenized genus Micarea (Ectolechiaceae, Ascomycota)

open access: yesTAXON, Volume 75, Issue 1, February 2026.
Abstract Micarea is a crustose cosmopolitan lichen genus that belongs to the euascomycete class Lecanoromycetes. Recent molecular phylogenies on the genus based on one to three loci have mostly focused on Micarea s.str., including the type species M. prasina, and suggested that Micarea s.l. is paraphyletic.

Global insular leaf size shifts follow the island rule, independently of insect herbivory and macroclimate

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 2, February 2026.
We found a positive, non‐linear, saturating relationship between mainland and island leaf sizes, reflecting an island rule‐like pattern. Small‐leaved mainland species tend to develop larger leaves on islands, while this effect weakens for larger‐leaved species, a pattern consistent across both conspecific and congeneric comparisons. Abstract The island

Moderators of Organic Matter Decomposition in Portuguese Streams: A Field Study and Literature Review

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 71, Issue 2, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Organic matter decomposition is a fundamental ecosystem process in streams, which have a large aquatic‐terrestrial interface. The sensitivity of organic matter decomposition to changes in environmental conditions promoted by human activities is relatively well understood at large and local scales.
