50% of the population of Ottoman Macedonia was Muslim, but the British never considered this, instead supporting independence for the one-fourth who were Bulgarian by religion (although mainly ethnic Macedonians). Bulgaria supported rebel groups in a quest to join Macedonia to Bulgaria, or at least to create an independent Macedonia.
