Critical Mach numbers in classical magnetohydrodynamics
Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1987We use stationary point analysis to compute generalized critical Mach numbers for finite amplitude fast and slow shocks in classical MHD fluids. We pay particular attention to the case where the resistive and thermal conduction dissipation scale lengths are comparable and much larger than the viscous scale lengths.

The Constant-Mach-number MHD generator
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1963It is shown that the optimum design of duct in a magnetohydrodynamic generator is close to the one in which the flow Mach number remains constant. This constant-Mach-number generator is analysed in some detail and it is shown that the optimum Mach number can be defined to within a few percent. For a γ of 1·25, this optimum is near 0·85.

On vortex sound at low Mach number
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1978A transformation is described which relates the sound generated by low Mach number flow to the flow vorticity. For compact flow fields the apparent sound source is of quadrupole type and linear in the vorticity and therefore also linear in the flow velocity.

Oscillating Airfoils at High Mach Number
Journal of the Aeronautical Sciences, 1953A simple formula is given for the pressure distribution on an oscillating airfoil in two-dimensional flow at high Mach Number. The formula is expected to be reasonably accurate if the pressure on the surface remains within the range 0.2 to 3.5 times the mainstream pressure.
