Continuous demagnetisation assessment for triple redundant nine-phase fault-tolerant permanent magnet machine

open access: yesThe Journal of Engineering, 2019
In this study, the risk of partial irreversible demagnetisation of a triple redundant, nine-phase fault tolerant machine based on permanent-magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance machine topology has been comprehensively assessed under various faults ...

Mapping the evolution of mitochondrial complex I through structural variation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Respiratory complex I (CI) is crucial for bioenergetic metabolism in many prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of a conserved set of core subunits and additional accessory subunits that vary depending on the organism. Here, we categorize CI subunits from available structures to map the evolution of CI across eukaryotes. Respiratory complex I (CI)

Magnetic loss measurement of surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous machines used in explosive environments

open access: yesThe Journal of Engineering, 2019
High energy-efficient permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) with low manufacturing costs and easy controllability are in high demand for the automotive and aerospace industries and in explosive environments (hazardous areas) like mines and the ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Teardrop and heart orbits of a swinging Atwood's Machine

open access: yes, 1993
An exact solution is presented for a swinging Atwood's machine. This teardrop-heart orbit is constructed using Hamilton-Jacobi theory. The example nicely illustrates the utility of the Hamilton-Jacobi method for finding solutions to nonlinear mechanical ...

FEM-coupled simulations and genetic algorithm model applied to reduce the torque ripple of a 2-phase SR motor drive

open access: yesThe Journal of Engineering, 2019
In order to reduce the torque ripple of SR motor drive, this work proposes a new methodology based on the converter, controller, and motor modelling, associated with a genetic algorithm optimisation model which uses the electromagnetic vibration data to ...

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Knowledge representation for basic visual categories [PDF]

open access: yes, 1985
This paper reports work on a model of machine learning which is based on the psychological theory of prototypical concepts. This theory is that concepts learnt naturally from interaction with the environment (basic categories) are not structured or ...

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Consequentialism & Machine Ethics: Towards a Foundational Machine Ethic to Ensure the Right Action of Artificial Moral Agents [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
In this paper, I argue that Consequentialism represents a kind of ethical theory that is the most plausible to serve as a basis for a machine ethic.
