Chemical composition of Macrocystis pyrifera (giant sargazo) collected in summer and winter and its possible use in animal feeding

open access: yesCiencias Marinas, 1994
In the present study, it is established that Macrocystis pyrifera collected in summer and winter, in Bahía Tortugas, B.C.S. (Mexico), presented variation in some components of nutritional interest for various animal species.

Not All Children Are the Same: Differences in the Microbiome Assembly During Early Development of Seaweeds

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 9, September 2026.
Understanding how early microbiomes assemble is central to explaining the ecology and evolution of host–microbe interactions. Comparing three macroalgal species, we show that hosts differ markedly in how they retain parental bacteria and filter environmental taxa during their early development.

Commercially Exploited Seaweed Species in Africa: Occurrences, Chemical Composition, Current Value Chain and Opportunities for Value Addition

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 18, Issue 4, September 2026.
Commercially exploited seaweed species in Africa, their biochemical composition, current uses, and value chain are reviewed. Potential value‐addition of seaweed is suggested regionally in Africa amongst countries producing similar seaweed species. ABSTRACT Africa has a wide range of coastal environments that support a diverse array of seaweed species ...

Correction: The Ecology of Microbial Communities Associated with Macrocystis pyrifera

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
The labels on panels A and B in Figure 2 were switched. Panel A should be labeled "Gammaproteobacteria" and panel B should be labeled "Alphaproteobacteria." Please see the corrected Figure 2 here:

ESTUDIO COMPARATIVO DEL PROCESO DE OBTENCIÓN DEL ÁCIDO ALGÍNICO EN ALGAS PARDAS (MARINAS): Macrocystis pyrifera y Lessonia trabeculata

open access: yes, 2005
The purpose of this research is to evaluate the performance of production of alginic acid laboratory scale in order to compare the results of the kinds of brown algae: Lessonia trabeculata vs. Macrocystis pyrifera.

Stable Isotopes in Eye Lenses Record Patterns and Variation in Resource‐Use Ontogeny of Three New Zealand Kelp Forest Fishes

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 7, July 2026.
Here, we describe the results of stable isotope analysis using sequentially deposited layers from fish eye lenses to model lifetime trophic shifts of three New Zealand kelp forest species: Notolabrus fucicola, Odax pullus, and Parapercis colias. Using eye lenses, we identified size‐structured trends and patterns of variability in estimates of basal ...

Variability in per capita oogonia and sporophyte production from giant kelp gametophytes (Macrocystis pyrifera, Phaeophyceae) Variabilidad de la producción per cápita de oogonios y esporofitos de huiro (Macrocystis pyrifera, Phaeophyceae)

open access: yesRevista Chilena de Historia Natural, 2004
Vegetative growth and fertility of kelp gametophytes are thought to be antagonistic, such that most successful kelp recruitment is assumed to result from fertilization of single oogonia released from unicellular female gametophytes.

Oceanographic Drivers of Larval Transport Variability in South Atlantic Jasus paulensis Populations

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract Effective fisheries management requires an understanding of the key influences on population variability. A fundamental driver of variability, particularly for isolated island populations, is the transport of planktonic early‐life stages.
