Amphibian loss alters periphyton structure and invertebrate growth in montane streams. [PDF]
This paper demonstrates that amphibian loss increases periphyton biomass, causes shifts in algal assemblages and reduces invertebrate growth. It highlights the importance of protecting amphibians in order to maintain normal stream ecosystem functioning, especially in nonforested streams where periphyton in the main energy resource.

Ecological relevance of non-perennial rivers for the conservation of terrestrial and aquatic communities. [PDF]
Abstract River conservation efforts traditionally focus on perennial watercourses (i.e., those that do not dry) and their associated aquatic biodiversity. However, most of the global river network is not perennial and thus supports both aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity. We assessed the conservation value of nonperennial rivers and streams (NPRS) in

Influence of water quality on the macroinvertebrate community in a tropical estuary (Buenaventura Bay). [PDF]
Abstract The anthropogenic discharges of inorganic nutrients impact water quality, affecting the macroinvertebrate assemblage and food safety. The main objective of this study was to examine the seawater quality and macroinvertebrate dynamics in muddy habitats of Buenaventura Bay, Colombian Pacific.

Recovery and Degradation Drive Changes in the Dispersal Capacity of Stream Macroinvertebrate Communities. [PDF]
Freshwater ecosystems across Europe are recovering unevenly despite restoration efforts, partly due to the limited ability of many species to disperse. Using a dataset of over 1300 time series, we found that improved ecological quality often leads to gains in macroinvertebrate species with strong dispersal capacities, while degrading sites lose these ...

Functional diversity of macroinvertebrates as a tool to evaluate wetland restoration
Considering different aspects of functional diversity of invertebrate communities can help elucidate the processes and mechanisms through which ecosystems recover following restoration. We encourage the use of trait‐based approaches to identify trends in processes and patterns that can guide future wetland restoration projects.
