Preferential deposition of macroplastic on floodplains
Abstract Floods have a large impact on the mobilization, distribution, and retention of plastic in rivers. During floods plastic transport in rivers increases, due to flushing of additional material into the river and (re-)mobilization of macroplastic previously deposited on floodplains and buried in the riverbed.

The shapes and sizes of macroplastics and other litter in rivers
Limited data exists on physical and geometric properties of river litter. To resolve this, we reveal the physical-structural relationships of river litter, using two of the most comprehensive datasets generated to date. First, we dissect the properties of river litter using a detailed dataset of over 14,000 riverbank items, for which their dimensions ...

Date prints on stranded macroplastics: Marine litter as a chronological marker in recent coastal deposits [PDF]
Plastic is a collective term describing a group of synthetic materials, most of which were invented over the course of the last century. Already in the 1970s, the magnitude of plastic pollution has been recognized as an issue of concern for the global ...

Quantifying land-based sources of plastic pollution in South Africa [PDF]
It is widely claimed that at least 80% of the plastic litter entering marine environments comes from land-based sources, yet there is little empirical evidence to support this. Most studies to date predict the flux of litter from land to sea using global

Accumulation of plastic litter in the marine environment is a pressing global concern. To study this issue, we use the Blue2 Modelling Framework (Blue2MF), an integrated modelling tool developed by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European ...

Lost in transportation - macroplastic retention in rivers
Rivers are dynamic systems disrupted by numerous physical structures such as dams, locks, bridges, and reservoirs. These discontinuities hinder hydrological connectivity and lead to the retention of water-borne materials. While such retention is well-documented for sediment, nutrients, and large wood, its role in macroplastic transport has only ...

Visual Observation to Detect Macroplastic Object in River: A Review of Current Knowledge [PDF]
Currently, the world is facing the problem of plastic pollution in water bodies. Plastic waste has become an abundant pollutant in the marine, coastal and river environments, making it a major threat to aquatic life.
