Seismic vulnerability assessment, damage scenarios and loss estimation: case study of the old city centre of Coimbra, Portugal [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The evaluation of the seismic risk of built-up areas is associated to the level of earthquake hazard, building vulnerability and level of exposure.

An extreme wave event in Timanfaya National Park: Possible first geological evidence of the 1755 Lisbon tsunami in Lanzarote, Canary Islands

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 49, Issue 13, Page 4133-4153, October 2024.
Two extreme wave event deposits of boulders have been located on a coastal platform formed by lavas from the 1730‐36 Timanfaya eruption in Lanzarote Island. The modelling of wave heights and tsunami heights required to mobilise these blocks shows that a tsunami was necessary to accumulate the boulders into ridges.

Intensity assessment from documentary data. Criteria and procedures in the daily practice of seismologists

open access: yesAnnals of Geophysics, 1996
A major problem in assessing macroseismic intensity from historical records is the lack of a standardized procedure for processing documentary sources and supplying unequivocal intensity estimates.

Seismic vulnerability assessment of masonry facade walls [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
This paper approaches the issue of seismic vulnerability assessment strategies for facade walls of traditional masonry buildings through the development of a methodology and its subsequent application to the old building stock of the historical city ...

Reducing the subjectivity of intensity estimates: the Fuzzy Set approach

open access: yesAnnals of Geophysics, 2000
We describe a method for the encoding and the computer analysis of the macroseismic effects deduced from historical sources allowing the complete formalization of the process of seismic intensity assessment.

Instrumental intensity as a tool for post-earthquake damage assessment: validation for the strong Vrancea earthquakes of August 1986 and May 1990 [PDF]

open access: yes
The frequency-dependent spectrum based seismic intensity, also called instrumental intensity, is calculated basically from the integration of the square values of spectral acceleration ordinates. The values of the instrumental intensity are calibrated to

Determination of geomechanical site effects in France from macroseismic intensities and reliability of macroseismic magnitude of historical events

open access: yesTectonophysics, 2000
Results from a detailed analysis of the French macroseismic database SIRENE96 show that geomechanical site effects (i.e. site effects due to superficial geology) can be statistically detected and quantified from macroseismic data. Our results are used to derive a predictive map of potential site effects in France and to check if site effects induce a ...

Macroseismology: the lessons learnt from the 1997/98 Colfiorito seismic sequence

open access: yesAnnals of Geophysics, 2008
The seismic sequence of the Umbria-Marche Apennines was a dramatic moment for the population involved; at the same time, it provided a unique occasion for the Italian scientific community and for the national civil protection to assess their respective ...
