Oxidative Stress and Cellular Protein Accumulation Are Present in Keratoconus, Macular Corneal Dystrophy, and Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Medicine, 2023
The aim of the study was to investigate oxidative stress as well as cellular protein accumulation in corneal diseases including keratoconus (KC), macular corneal dystrophy (MCD), and Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) at their primary affecting ...

Structural Collagen Alterations in Macular Corneal Dystrophy Occur Mainly in the Posterior Stroma

open access: yesCurrent Eye Research, 2010
Purpose: Collagen fibrils in the corneal stroma in macular corneal dystrophy, on average, are more closely spaced than in the normal cornea. This study was conducted to investigate if this occurs uniformly across the stroma or is more prevalent at ...

Keratoconus Associated With Corneal Macular Dystrophy: In Vivo Confocal Microscopic Evaluation.

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Ophthalmology, 2006
PURPOSE: The authors present a case, studied through in vivo confocal microscopy, of concomitant keratoconus and macular corneal dystrophy (MCD). METHODS: A 29-year-old man underwent a penetrating keratoplasty in the right eye in May 2005.

Heterogeneity in Macular Corneal Dystrophy

Archives of Ophthalmology, 1988
Macular corneal dystrophy is an autosomal recessive disorder in which abnormal deposits in the corneal stroma have been identified. We examined the corneal buttons of 12 patients, who had clinical features of macular dystrophy, by histochemical staining, transmission electron microscopy, and immunohistochemical techniques.

Macular Corneal Dystrophy and Posterior Corneal Abnormalities

Cornea, 2016
This study reports the presentation of 2 families with macular corneal dystrophy (MCD). The aim of this study was to show whether ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) can, based on posterior changes of the cornea in MCD, assist in the choice of surgery, either anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) or penetrating keratoplasty (PK), compared with optical ...

The role of corneal endothelium in macular corneal dystrophy development and recurrence

Science China Life Sciences, 2023
Macular corneal dystrophy (MCD) is a progressive, bilateral stromal dystrophic disease that arises from mutations in carbohydrate sulfotransferase 6 (CHST6). Corneal transplantation is the ultimate therapeutic solution for MCD patients. Unfortunately, postoperative recurrence remains a significant challenge.

Allelic Heterogeneity of the Carbohydrate Sulfotransferase-6 Gene in Patients With Macular Corneal Dystrophy

open access: yesClinical Genetics, 2005
Macular corneal dystrophy (MCD) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by grayish white opacities in the cornea. It is caused by mutations in the carbohydrate sulfotransferase-6 (CHST6) gene, which codes for the enzyme corneal N ...

Recurrence of Macular Corneal Dystrophy Within Grafts

American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1983
Two patients (a 41-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man) with macular corneal dystrophy developed significant visual impairment from recurrent disease within corneal grafts. One patient required regrafting 18 years after a penetrating keratoplasty, and the second patient underwent a penetrating graft 19 years after a lamellar corneal graft.
