Conservation of migratory Magellanic penguins requires marine zoning

open access: yesBiological Conservation, 2014
Abstract Conservation of migratory species requires an understanding of their migration path and pattern. We used band returns and satellite tracking to characterize the seasonal migration of Magellanic penguins breeding in southern Argentina, with the purpose of identifying an effective conservation approach for this species. Band returns show these

Acoustic cues to development of African Penguins (Spheniscus demersus) begging calls

open access: yesIbis, Volume 167, Issue 1, Page 286-294, January 2025.
Avian begging calls mediate parent–offspring conflict and direct parental care to genetically related progeny. We found that the fundamental frequency of begging calls of African Penguins Spheniscus demersus decreases as the penguins age and gain mass, before reaching a lower plateau when the chick reaches about 1 kg.

Climate Change Impacts Pair‐Bond Dynamics in a Long‐Lived Monogamous Species

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 27, Issue 12, December 2024.
Climate change can influence populations by affecting mating processes. We examined the impact of climate on widowhood and divorce in a lmonogamous species, and the subsequent effects on individual vital rates and life‐history outcomes over 54 years in a population of snow petrel (Pagodroma nivea) .

Blood parameters and measurements of weight in the rehabilitation of Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus, Foster 1781)

open access: yesArquivo Brasileiro de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, 2015
During the austral winter the appearance of the Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) is common on the southern coast of Brazil. The oil pollution constitutes a major cause of death of these birds.

Beyond rings on birds for determination of movements: Wither the archival tag? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Two methods for determining the movement of birds are discussed; Global Location Sensing (determination of position by consideration of day length and local timing of mid-day) and dead reckoning (calculation of routes by vectors).

Coastal connectivity of marine predators over the Patagonian Shelf during the highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2024, Issue 11, November 2024.
Animal movement and population connectivity are key areas of uncertainty in efforts to understand and predict the spread of infectious disease. The emergence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in South America poses a significant threat to globally significant populations of colonial breeding marine predators in the South Atlantic.

Clinical biochemistry of rescued Magellanic Penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus): serum or heparinized plasma?

open access: yesArquivo Brasileiro de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia
In the last few years, an increasing number of debilitated Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) has been rescued and taken to rehabilitation centers on Brazil’s southern coast to be clinically treated and evaluated for re-introduction. This work
