Abstract We show that H I clouds in the Magellanic Clouds are stripped by the ram-pressure due to the halo and disk gases of the Galaxy. Molecular clouds are swept to the edge of the LMC, showing an eccentric distribution. The stripped HI clouds form a narrow band on the sky, and mimics the Magellanic Stream, when the LMC takes a polar ...

Ionized Gas in the Magellanic Stream
EAS Publications Series, 2012We report on new optical emission line observations toward the northern part of the Magellanic Stream. Using the Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper (WHAM), we have detected Hα emission toward 17 directions spread across 50 ∘ of the Stream. We find strong variation in the Hα surface brightness with no significant correlation with Magellanic longitude. We compare

The Dynamics of the Magellanic Stream
Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia, 1976In this talk I shall describe briefly some of the theoretical ideas of the origin of the Magellanic Stream and then give a more personal view of the results of model fitting. The Magellanic Stream definitely seems to be an extragalactic feature: the apparent connection of the Stream to the Magellanic Clouds and the continuity of the radial velocity ...

The Magellanic Stream and the Interacting Galaxies
Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan, 1981Abstract The Magellanic Stream is reproduced numerically by taking account of the gravitational interaction of three galaxies, the Galaxy, and the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC). The masses are taken as 2.75 × 1011 M⊙ for the 2 × 1010 M⊙ for the LMC, and 2 × 109 M⊙ for the SMC.

The Origin of the Magellanic Stream
1989New observations of the Magellanic Stream are used in a recent discrete ram-pressure theory which proposes that the signs of interaction in the Magellanic System point to a collision event some 2–4 × 108 years ago, and that the collisions between the inter-Cloud gas and a discrete halo produce the Magellanic Stream.
