The origin of the Magellanic Stream [PDF]

open access: greenMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1994
SHORTENED ABSTRACT: We present numerical investigations designed to critically test models of the origin of the Magellanic Stream. The most developed model is the tidal model which fails to reproduce several of its characteristic properties. We suggest an alternative model for the origin of the Stream which can explain all of its observed features and ...

The Magellanic Stream as a probe of the galactic halo [PDF]

open access: bronzeSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1979
Recent observations of the Magellanic Stream can be used to set limits on a possible hot halo surrounding the Galaxy. The observations are described in detail elsewhere (Mirabel, Cohen & Davies, submitted to Mon. Not. R. astr. Soc.). Briefly, the neutral hydrogen in the northern end of the Magellanic Stream is concentrated in narrow filaments which

The Magellanic Stream and the Magellanic Cloud System [PDF]

open access: bronzeSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1999
A tidal model has been introduced to the triple system of the Galaxy, Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (the LMC and SMC hereafter) and successfully reproduced the Magellanic Stream (Murai and Fujimoto 1980; Lin and Lynden-Bell 1982; Gardiner et al. 1994; Gardiner and Noguchi 1995; Lin et al. 1995), a narrow band of diffuse atomic hydrogen gas emerging

The Small‐Scale Structure of the Magellanic Stream [PDF]

open access: bronzeThe Astrophysical Journal, 2002
We have mapped two regions at the northern tip of the Magellanic Stream in neutral hydrogen 21-cm emission using the Arecibo telescope. The new data are used to study the morphology and properties of the Stream far away from the Magellanic Clouds, as well as to provide indirect constraints on the properties of the Galactic Halo.

The binarity of the Clouds and the formation of the Magellanic Stream [PDF]

open access: bronzeProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2008
AbstractThe HST proper motion (PM) measurements of the Clouds have severe implications for their interaction history with the Milky Way (MW) and with each other. The Clouds are likely on their first passage about the MW and the SMC's orbit about the LMC is better described as quasi-periodic rather than circular.

Kinematics of the Magellanic Stream and Implications for Its Ionization [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 2020
The Magellanic Stream and the Leading Arm form a massive, filamentary system of gas clouds surrounding the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. Here we present a new component-level analysis of their ultraviolet (UV) kinematic properties using a sample of ...

A Search for Stars in the Magellanic Stream [PDF]

open access: bronzeSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1984
A search for faint stars (to in B) in a bright part of the Magellanic Stream designated MSI by Mathewson (1976), carried out from automatic scans of UKST photographs by means of the COSMOS machine gives a negative result as far as the main HI cloud is concerned, but reveals a small surplus of images in a patch 1 degree away from the main HI ...

The small-scale structure of the Magellanic stream as a foundation for galaxy evolution [PDF]

open access: yesSerbian Astronomical Journal, 2010
The Magellanic Stream (MS) is the nearest example of a gaseous trail formed by interacting galaxies. While the substantial gas masses in these kinds of circumgalactic structures are postulated to represent important sources of fuel for future star ...
