High resolution magnetic Barkhausen noise (MBN) measurements were performed on cracks that were present in a section of 390 mm diameter and 29 mm thick steel pipe. The MBN indicators considered were the MBN energy signal, the number of events, and the variation of pulse height distributions (PHD) in the crack vicinity.

Barkhausen noise and size effects in magnetic microstructures

The properties of the Barkhausen noise in a series of permalloy squares have been measured with a magneto-optical hysteresigraph. The magnetic structures have been litographically defined in a permalloy film (thickness 160 nm) as squares having a size from 20 to 320 μm.

The Barkhausen noise is calculated for ferromagnetic cores used in magnetic amplifiers. The method of analysis follows that used in the analysis of the shot effect. The signal-to-noise ratio for a typical magnetic amplifier circuit is calculated and compared with experiment.
