A Magnetic Journal Bearing

open access: yesBulletin of JSME, 1968
This report is related to the development of a magnetic journal bearing which can support a rotating shaft without any mechanical contact. A complete levitation is successfully achieved by means of a combination of permanent magnets and servo-controlled electromagnets. The principle and the characteristics of this bearing are as follows.

Actuators for Active Magnetic Bearings

open access: yesActuators, 2017
The literature of active magnetic bearing (AMB) technology dates back to at least 1937 when the earliest work that clearly describes an active magnetic bearing system was published by Jesse Beams [...]

Global Rather Than Vertical‐Selective Saccadic Abnormalities in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To test whether vertical saccades are preferentially affected in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). Methods PSP patients (n = 24) were compared to age‐matched controls (n = 94) and two degenerative groups (Alzheimer's disease, n = 20; Lewy body disease, n = 50).

From Adult to Adolescent: Alignment in Clinical Trials and Outcomes in Axial Spondyloarthritis

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Accepted Article.
Spondyloarthritis (SpA) is a group of chronic inflammatory diseases encompassing axial and peripheral forms, with up to 20% of patients developing symptoms before age 16. Despite this substantial pediatric burden, treatment options for juvenile‐onset SpA (JSpA), particularly those with axial disease (axJSpA), remain limited.

Comparison of Different Actuator Concepts for Applications in Rotating Machinery

open access: yesInternational Journal of Rotating Machinery, 1994
Considerable improvements of machines can be expected in the near future through the use ofelectronics in combination with control techniques. A key position will be held by the actuator systems that finally have to accomplish the controlled energy ...

Adaptive Observer for Coupled Wave PDE and Infinite ODE With Sampled Data and Unknown Input: Application to Brain Hemodynamics Estimation

open access: yesInternational Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing, EarlyView.
This article proposes a convergent adaptive observer for a damped wave PDE and an infinite‐dimensional ODE coupled in cascade using sampled‐in‐space ODE state measurements. The proposed observer estimates the distributed states of the PDE and ODE along with unknown PDE parameters and spatial input.

Mechanochemical Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructured ErB4 and NdB4 Rare‐Earth Tetraborides

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
ErB4 and NdB4 nanostructured powders are produced by mechanochemical synthesis. 5 h mechanical alloying and 4 M HCl acid leaching are used in the production. ErB4 and NdB4 powders exhibit maximum magnetization of 0.4726 emu g−1 accompanied with an antiferromagnetic‐to‐paramagnetic phase transition at about TN = 18 K and 0.132 emu g−1 with a maximum at ...

Fault Detection in Active Magnetic Bearings Using Digital Twin Technology

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Active magnetic bearings (AMBs) are widely used in different industries to offer non-contact and high-velocity rotational support. The AMB is prone to failures, which may result in system instability and decreased performance.

Variable Stiffness Flexure Structures Enabled by Phase‐Change Gallium and Adhesive Interfacial Locking for Soft Robotic Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A flexure‐based variable stiffness structure is developed by integrating phase‐change modulation and adhesive interfacial locking of gallium. The design enables a wide stiffness variability, transitioning from soft, flexible behavior to rigid, load‐supporting performance.

Magnetic bearing update [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
Stabilization of whirl instability by floppy, viscous bearing mounts is discussed and required material properties are estimated for the new tilt-whirl mode in eddy-current stabilized magnetic bearings. A relatively low Young`s modules Y {approximately} 10{sup 5} and high viscosity {zeta} {approximately} 10{sup 7} are required (both in MKS units ...
