Mapping the Magnetic Fields of the Sun

Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1952
New apparatus for observing magnetic fields on the surface of the sun has recently been put into use at the Hale Solar Laboratory in Pasadena. It utilizes the longitudinal Zeeman effect, wherein a spectral line is split by the field into two overlapping oppositely polarized components. The new equipment has three noteworthy features : (1) a large plane

Magnetic fields mapping with the phase reference method

Magnetic Resonance Imaging, 1999
A simple method for imaging the magnetic field produced by arbitrary current distributions is presented. The method is based on the use of a phase reference image and can be easily adapted to any standard magnetic resonance imaging scanner. Examples are given to application to gradient coil characterization and quantitative field measurements.

Mapping a Star's Magnetic Field

Science, 1997
Astronomers have enlisted a continent-wide array of radio telescopes to make the first map of the magnetic field around a star other than our sun. The map, constructed by measuring the polarization of radio waves from clouds of excited gas around the red giant star, suggests that its magnetic field has roughly the same shape as the fields of Earth and ...

Simultaneous localization and mapping using ambient magnetic field

2010 IEEE Conference on Multisensor Fusion and Integration, 2010
In this paper we propose a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) method that utilizes local anomalies of the ambient magnetic field present in many indoor environments. We use a Rao-Blackwellized particle filter to estimate the pose distribution of the robot and Gaussian Process regression to model the magnetic field map.

Characterization of the indoor magnetic field for applications in Localization and Mapping

2012 International Conference on Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation (IPIN), 2012
To improve our understanding of the indoor properties of the perturbed Earth's magnetic field, we have developed a methodology to obtain dense and spatially referenced samples of the magnetic vector field on the ground's surface and in the free space above.

Parameterization of the LHCb magnetic field map

2007 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record, 2007
The LHCb warm magnet[1] has been designed to provide an integrated field of 4 Tm for tracks coming from the primary vertex. To insure good momentum resolution of a few per mil, an accurate description of the magnetic field map is needed. This is achieved by combining the information from a TOSCA-based simulation and data from measurements.

A field mapping device for the TOPAZ magnet

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 1986
A field mapping device was recently constructed and used to measure the field distribution of the solenoidal magnet of the TOPAZ detector for the 30 GeV × 30 GeV e+ e− colliding experiment at TRISTAN, KEK. The measurement has been done successfully at fields between 0.5 and 1.2 T, over a volume of 2.3 m in diameter and 4.2 m in length.

Field mapping system for cyclotron magnet

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 2005
Abstract This paper presents a Hall probe mapping system for measuring a cyclotron magnet, which has been fabricated for the 13 MeV cyclotron at the Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences. Two Hall probes are mounted on a precision mechanical x – y stage and map magnetic field in the Cartesian coordinate system.

Quadrupole magnet field mapping for FRIB

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms, 2013
Abstract Extensive magnetic field map measurements have been done on a newly built superconducting quadrupole triplet with sextupole and octupole coils nested within every quadrupole. The magnetic field multipole composition and fringe field distributions have been analyzed and an improved parameterization of the field has been developed within the ...
