Sealing mechanism of magnetic fluids

Journal of Shanghai University (English Edition), 2006
Sealing is one of the most successful applications of magnetic fluids. However, the sealing pressure difference is not satisfactory. This paper theoretically analyzes the mechanism of magnetic fluids sealing. Main factors that have significant effects on the sealing ability include viscous stress on the interfacial surface, magnetic surface tension ...

Sealing Performance of a Magnetic Fluid Seal for Rotary Blood Pumps

Artificial Organs, 2009
Abstract A magnetic fluid (MF) for a rotary blood pump seal enables mechanical contact‐free rotation of the shaft and, hence, has excellent durability. The performance of a MF seal, however, has been reported to decrease in liquids. We have developed a MF seal that has a “shield” mechanism and a new MF with a higher magnetization of ...

Experimental study on splashing characteristics of magnetic fluid in a magnetic fluid seal

Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 1993
Abstract The splashing characteristics of a magnetic fluid spindle seal designed for magnetic disk storage use were experimentally studied in terms of the meniscus spread and configuration formed around the seal gap. The critical rotational speed at which splashing of the magnetic fluid is initiated is found to be uniquely determined by the spread of

Dynamic Sealing with Magnetic Fluids

A S L E Transactions, 1975
If a lip seal could use a liquid lip, the resulting perfect conformity to the rotating and stationary surfaces would negate the effects of surface finish and mechanical run-out. Magnetic fluids, called ferrofluids, make this type of seal possible and practical.

Non-uniform Distribution of Magnetic Fluid in Multistage Magnetic Fluid Seals

Journal of Magnetics, 2017
Magnetic fluid, a new type of magnetic material, is a colloidal liquid constituted of nano-scale ferromagnetic particles suspended in carrier fluid. Magnetic fluid sealing is one of the most successful applications of magnetic fluid. As a new type of seal offering the advantages of no leakage, long life and high reliability, the magnetic fluid seal has

Dynamic sealing with magnetic fluids

Wear, 1989
Abstract Ferrofluidic seals are the most advanced application of ferromagnetic fluids. They are used for sealing gases at pressures up to 3.5 MPa and vacuum sealing (up to 10−8 Torr) at shaft speeds over 30 000 rev min−1. This paper presents the design and operating principles of a ferromagnetic seal.

Sealing Effect of Magnetic Fluid at a Crack

Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures, 1993
This article discusses non-leak liquid as an intelli gent material in connection with safety engineering. In this inves tigation, the magnetic fluids are tested for the constitution of a non-leakage pipeline system. The experimental results show that magnetic fluids have good characteristics for preventing leakage of a liquid in a pipeline.

Magnetic Fluid Seals for Special Applications

A S L E Transactions, 1980
Three magnetic fluid seals custom engineered to meet specific application objectives are discussed. These seals are: a belt edge seal, a large diameter seal and a centrifugal seal. Extensive experimental data were acquired on the first two seals to determine their performance characteristics. Some of these test results are compared with the theoretical

An analysis on the magnetic fluid seal capacity

Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 2006
Abstract The capacity of the magnetic fluid seal depends on the magnetic field and the saturation magnetization of the magnetic fluid. There are many factors that influence the magnetic field and the seal capacity of the magnetic fluid seal, such as the sealing gap, the shaft eccentricity, the shaft diameter, and the centrifugal force. In this paper,
