3D physical and finite element simulations for Non Destructive Testing (NDT) of Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL)

open access: yes, 2015
3D physical modelling and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) have been performed to investigate individual sensor's performances fabricated from highly sensitive advanced state of the art semiconductor heterostructure materials which have been developed at the University of Manchester, and to explore Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) NDT configurations using a ...

Nondestructive testing systems with magnetic flux leakage (MFL)

open access: yes, 2016
Paper P100, 1 S.Ferromagnetic components used in mechanical, automotive and civil engineering are mostly subject to high mechanical loads. Cracks, which may form during manufacture or in use, may lead to a complete failure of the component in the worst ...

Image Classification Method Based on Improved Deep Convolutional Neural Networks for the Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) Signal of Girth Welds in Long-Distance Pipelines

open access: yesSustainability, 2022
Girth weld defects in long-distance oil and gas pipelines are one of the main causes of pipeline leakage failure and serious accidents. Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) is one of the most widely used inline inspection methods for long-distance pipelines ...

A Defect Evaluation Methodology Based on Multiple Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) Testing Signal Eigenvalues

Research in Nondestructive Evaluation, 2015
This article is based on the associated linearity of magnetic flux leakage signal eigenvalues and detection status information, proposing a methodology that applies multiple magnetic flux leakage signal eigenvalues to evaluate defects and goes a step further in conforming the limitation of the traditional evaluation system, which merely uses signal ...

Quantification of Complex Defects in Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) Testing Using Gradient Gray Level Analysis Based on Least Square Approximation

2019 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC), 2019
Knowing that realistic defects in materials are not simple but complex which influence inspection results, it is most important that the NDT/E of materials provide quantitative information of defects such as size, length, depth and orientation so as to accurately and efficiency predict a structures integrity and lifespan.

Testing of a Dual Field Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) Inspection Tool for Detecting and Characterizing Mechanical Damage Features

2008 7th International Pipeline Conference, Volume 2, 2008
Battelle has developed dual field magnetic flux leakage (MFL) technology for the detection and characterization of mechanical damage to pipelines. The basic principle involves the use of a high magnetic field between 140 and 180 Oersted (11.1 to 14.3 kA/m) and the use of a low magnetic field between 50 and 70 Oersted (4 to 5.6 kA/m).

Simulation Analysis of Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) Testing for Wire Rope Based on Multilayer Helical Structure

Using finite element simulation analysis, different wire rope structures with the same diameter and damage models were created for analyzing the principle of magnetic flux leakage (MFL) wire rope inspection. As a result, different wire rope modelling structures result in different distributions of the internal magnetic field within the wire rope as ...
