Machining mechanism in pulsed magnetic treatment for micro-tools
The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2018A new tool strengthening method for micro-tools using pulsed magnetic treatment has been experimentally investigated. Compared with the conventional tool strengthening method, the pulsed magnetic treatment of micro-tools enables effectively reduce tool wear both by improving the mechanical properties of the tool material and changing the tool-chip ...

Energy losses during the magnetization process of soft magnetic laminations depend on the excitation waveform. Manufacturers of magnetic materials may not provide losses for different excitation waveforms. This may affect the accuracy of the predicted losses which are used to estimate the performance of electrical equipment during the predesign stage ...

Novel moving-magnet electrodynamic feed units for small machine tools
Production Engineering, 2013Small feed motions in the mm and cm range today are mostly realised with miniaturised leadscrew motor systems, piezo stages and moving-coil actuators. A short survey on typical properties of those existing feed units for small machine tools is given first.

A low-cost magnetic tape control system for machine tools
Radio and Electronic Engineer, 1964Digital recording techniques are applied to the operation of a die-sinker. The system described uses magnetic recording in preference to punched paper tape where cost, transportation and simplicity are the major design considerations. Irregular shapes and contours are traced by a stylus which is electrically connected via an arc to a conductive coating

Software tool for conception and optimisation of permanent magnet synchronous machines
International Journal of Applied Electromagnetics and Mechanics, 2004The aim of this paper is to describe a software tool for conception and optimisation of permanent magnet synchronous machines associated to their converters, using a coupled model for magnetic field and electrical circuit equations. In this paper, the emphasis is on the specifications of the tool: modularity, adaptability and evolutive capacity.

A novel magnetic actuator design for active damping of machining tools
International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture, 2014Abstract Parts and cutting tools with large structural flexibility experience both forced and chatter vibrations during machining, resulting in poor surface finish or damage to the machine. This paper presents the design principles of a novel 3 degrees of freedom linear magnetic actuator which increases the damping and static stiffness of flexible ...

Magnetic abrasive finishing of cutting tools for machining of titanium alloys
CIRP Annals, 2012Abstract Uncoated carbide tool surfaces are conditioned using magnetic abrasive finishing (MAF) to improve the tool wear characteristics by reducing friction between the tool and chip. The configuration of the magnetic particle chains that drive the abrasives plays an important role in surface finishing with minimal damage to the tool cutting edges ...

Assessment of machine tool trunnion axis motion error, using magnetic double ball bar
International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture, 2006Abstract A method is proposed in this paper to assess the axis motion errors of a trunnion-type A -axis using the magnetic double ball bar (DBB) as the measuring instrument. The proposed method consists of five DBB tests with a single setup for all of the tests and the exclusive motion of the trunnion axis during data acquisition.
