Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental process in a cosmic plasma such as the solar corona, responsible for heating and for many dynamic phenomena. We here review briefly the basic theory of reconnection in two dimensions and then proceed to describe several features of the way it operates in three dimensions.

This lecture deals with the concept of magnetic field lines and with the conservation of magnetic flux. In high temperature fusion devices like tokamaks flux conservation can be violated and reconnection can occur at closed magnetic field lines. Reconnection processes lead to changes in the global topology of the magnetic field.

Nonlinear collisionless magnetic reconnection
Physical Review Letters, 1993Collisionless magnetic reconnection in regimes where the mode structure is characterized by global convection cells is found to exhibit a quasiexplosive time behavior in the early nonlinear stage where the fluid displacement is smaller than the equilibrium scale length. This process is accompanied by the formation of a current density sublayer narrower

Hall Magnetic Reconnection Rate
Physical Review Letters, 2004Two-dimensional Hall magnetohydrodynamic simulations are used to determine the magnetic reconnection rate in the Hall limit. The simulations are run until a steady state is achieved for four initial current sheet thicknesses: L=1,5,10, and 20c/omega(pi), where c/omega(pi) is the ion inertial length.

Magnetic Reconnection: Collisionless Regimes
Physica Scripta, 2004Recent efforts on the theory of magnetic reconnection in collisionless regimes are reviewed. The differences between dissipative and collisionless reconnection are discussed. The results of simulations obtained with a new, initial value, finite volume code are presented.

Reconnection rates in driven magnetic reconnection
Physics of Plasmas, 2007Using resistive magnetohydrodynamic simulations, we investigate the influence of various parameters on the reconnection rate in two scenarios of magnetic reconnection. The first scenario consists of the “Newton Challenge” problem [Birn et al., Geophys. Res. Lett. 32, L06105 (2005)].
