In this chapter, we describe the use of individual nitrogen–vacancy (NV) centers in diamond as nanoscale sensors for magnetic- fi eld detection and imaging. We start by reviewing the original proposals and fi rst proof- of-concept experiments for NV magnetometry and then discuss recent applications of this emerging technology.
