Abstract Can magnetoresistors replace fluxgate sensors in precise applications such as navigation and detection of metal objects? Anisotropic Magnetoresistors (AMRs) and Giant Magnetoresistors (GMRs) can reach 10 nT resolution. It is possible to improve their stability by ac techniques, but the electronics becomes complex and consumes more power.

Earlier papers1–3 in this journal have described experiments on measuring the magnetic fields of current-carrying wires and permanent magnets using magnetic field probes of various kinds. This paper explains how to use an iPad and the free app MagnetMeter-3D Vector Magnetometer and Accelerometer4 (compass HD) to measure the magnetic fields.

A device for measuring complex permeabilities, called a magnetic flux sensor, has been constructed from ferrite. Tests of the sensor which involve the imaginary part of the complex permeability are described in this paper. With a signal-to-null ratio of 2:1, the sensor can detect a change of resistance per unit resistance in metallic samples of 1.1×10 ...

In magnetic surveys it is often more useful to deal with the magnetic field gradients than with the field itself. This paper describes a device which measures magnetic field gradients directly and which is not influenced by uniform magnetic fields. Even if asymmetries exist in the device, the constant part of the magnetic field will appear as a signal ...

Abstract : LONG-TERM GOALS. Clandestine mine reconnaissance is one of the Navy's highest MCM priorities. During the early 1990's, a helium-cooled superconducting gradiometer was demonstrated in the Magnetic and Acoustic Detection of Mines (MADOM) ATD to provide effective detection and classification, especially against buried mines, and to reduce ...
