Characterization of NiMnGa magnetic shape memory alloys

Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2004
Abstract Magnetic shape memory (MSM) effect is a new invention in actuator materials field, allowing even 50 times greater strains than in previous magnetically controlled materials (magnetostrictive). In MSM materials the magnetic field moves microscopic parts of the material (so-called twins) that leads to a net shape change of the material.

An Overview on Magnetic Shape Memory Alloys

2021
This chapter summarizes the development history and research status of magnetic shape memory alloys. The crystal structures are analyzed according to the phase diagram. Finally, the basic concept and properties related to martensitic transformation or twin boundary motion are introduced, including shape memory effect, superelasticity, magnetic-field ...

4D printing of Magnetic Shape Memory Alloys

2020
Magnetic shape memory alloys (MSMA) are ferromagnetic materials exhibiting a plastic reversible transformation when subjected to a magnetic field. This transformation occurs within few milliseconds, making them good candidates for ultra-fast actuators.

Nonlinear Dynamic Characteristics of Magnetic Shape Memory Alloy Actuator

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2015
A kind of hysteretic nonlinear model of magnetic shape memory alloy (MSMA) was developed in this paper, and the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of MSMA actuator were investigated. Van der Pol nonlinear item were introduced to interpret the hysteretic phenomena of strain-magnetic field intensity (MFI) curves of MSMA, and the constitutive relationship ...

Magnetic properties of Mn2NiSn shape memory alloy

Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, 2013
In this paper, we present the magnetic properties of the inverse Heusler Mn2NiSn alloy computed by ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations in order to understand the large magnetic moments observed in experiments in contrast to smaller values obtained in previous ab initio calculations.

Magnetic-field-induced changes in magnetic shape memory alloys

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2008
Abstract First-principles calculations have been used to investigate the physical properties of magnetic shape memory alloys. We find that the martensitic instability of the high-temperature cubic phase in X2YZ ( X = Fe , Co, Ni, Pd; Y = Mn , Fe, Co; Z = Al , Ga, Ge, In, Sn) is strongly influenced by the anomalous change of the ...

Shape Memory Effect in Fe-Pd Magnetic Shape Memory Alloy Thin Films

Materials Science Forum, 2010
The shape memory effect (SME) and magnetic shape memory effect (MSME) Fe-Pd thin film are using the film curvature method. The corresponding residual stress change due to theSME and MSME in Fe-Pd film is measuredduring thermal cycling and magnetic field changing.

Magnetic Shape Memory alloy based Fiber Bragg Grating magnetic field sensor

2006 5th IEEE Conference on Sensors, 2006
The paper discusses a new device for magnetic field sensing, based on the integration of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a magnetic shape memory alloy (MSMA). The latter is a new kind of material able to show extremely large strains in response to a magnetic field.
