Microstructure-based modeling of magneto-rheological elastomers

SPIE Proceedings, 2012
Filled with iron particles, polymers can be made responsive to magnetic fields. Specifically, the elastomers that change stiffness in response to a magnetic field are usually called magneto-rheological elastomers (MREs). Anisotropic MREs, in which the particles are aligned during curing and form chain-like structures, exhibit a more significant ...

Modeling of Magneto-Rheological Elastomers for Harmonic Shear Deformation

IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2012
Magneto-rheological elastomers (MREs) are a class of smart materials which can adjust their modulus or stiffness by an applied magnetic field. Thus, MREs can be used as controllable stiffness elements in various engineering systems. In order to use them for engineering applications, characterizations of MRE behaviors under magnetic fields and ...

Electrical Properties of Magneto-Rheological Elastomers

Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and Intelligent Systems, Volume 1, 2008
A magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) is comprised of ferromagnetic particles aligned in a polymer medium by exposure to a magnetic field. The structures of the magnetic particles within elastomers are very sensitive to the external stimulus of either mechanical force or magnetic field, which result in multi-response behaviors in MRE.

Sensor Behavior of Magneto-Rheological Elastomers

ASME 2010 Conference on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and Intelligent Systems, Volume 2, 2010
Magneto-Rheological Elastomers (MREs) are composite materials of an elastomer matrix with a magnetic, micron-sized, powder filler. These materials have gained notoriety because they change stiffness substantially when exposed to a magnetic field giving them the capability of acting as a variable spring for numerous applications.

Evaluation of magneto-rheological elastomers for spacecrafts

2011
This study focuses on the stiffness controllability of magneto-rheological elastomer (MRE) but also on the damping dependency with the magnetic field. It is well known that elastomer visco-elastic behavior is highlighted by elliptic hysteresis loops. Force-deflection loops of MRE were measured for different amplitudes and frequencies conditions.

Experimental Investigation on Magneto-Rheological Elastomers

2018
The paper describes an experimental investigation conducted on Magneto-Rheological Elastomers (MRE); these materials, consisting of an elastomeric matrix containing ferromagnetic particles, are considered smart material as it is possible to control their mechanical properties by means of an applied magnetic field.

A Vibration Isolator Based on Magneto-Rheological Elastomer

2016
The paper presents an investigation about a magneto-rheological elastomeric (MRE) pad to be adopted as seismic semi-active isolator for lightweight structures. MRE pad may change its stiffness if immersed in a magnetic field. This characteristic allows to real time shift the fundamental frequency of the isolated structure. In this way it is possible to

A Study on the Tribological Characteristics of a Magneto-Rheological Elastomer

Journal of Tribology, 2012
Research on the applications of magneto-rheological (MR) elastomers in mechanical engineering has greatly expanded, whereas the performance of MR fluids in tribology has rarely been investigated. In this study, the tribological characteristics of an MR elastomer are identified in order to improve tribological performance with the activation of a ...

Analysis of magneto rheological elastomers for energy harvesting systems

International Journal of Applied Electromagnetics and Mechanics, 2020
Magneto Rheological Elastomers (MREs) are composite materials based on an elastomer filled by magnetic particles. Anisotropic MRE can be easily manufactured by curing the material under homogeneous magnetic field which creates column of particles. The magnetic and elastic properties are actually coupled making these MREs suitable for energy conversion.
