Athermal Shape Memory Effect in Magnetoactive Elastomers
ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 2020Shape memory materials (SMMs) are usually referred to as materials with the ability to recover the original shape via certain thermal stimulations, such as temperature increase. Such shape memory behaviors achieved thermally usually exhibit slow response due to the constraint of thermal conductivity, leaving a big challenge for situations with ...

A Multipole Magnetoactive Elastomer for Vibration-Driven Locomotion
Soft Robotics, 2023Smart materials such as magnetoactive elastomers (MAEs) combine elastic and magnetic properties that can be significantly changed in response to a magnetic field and therefore offer enormous potential for applications in both scientific research and engineering.

Magnetoresistive Effect in Magnetoactive Elastomers
Journal of Superconductivity and Novel Magnetism, 2012A study of the influence of magnetic field on the resistivity of the magnetoactive (magnetorheological) elastomer has been conducted. The material consisted of a soft polymer matrix and magnetic fillers being powders of Fe, Ni, and the Fe–Nd–B alloy. Under the influence of the field with a value of 300 mT, the elastomer exhibited the magnetoresistive ...

Magnetoactive liquid crystal elastomer nanocomposites
J. Mater. Chem., 2009We present liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) nanocomposites containing superparamagnetic nanoparticles that perform local heat dissipation upon irradiation with electromagnetic fields. A fast local temperature rise is observed that leads to a distinct contraction at the nematic–isotropic transition temperature of the elastomer.

Controllable hydrophobicity of magnetoactive elastomer coatings
Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 2018Abstract A series of magnetoactive elastomer (MAE) coatings consisting of a silicone matrix and carbonyl iron particles (3–5 μm in diameter) have been synthesized and their hydrophobic properties have been investigated in various magnetic fields of disk-shaped permanent NdFeB magnets.

Finite deformation analysis of isotropic magnetoactive elastomers
Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamics, 2020In this study, the large deformation analysis of the magnetoactive elastomers based on continuum mechanics approach has been conducted. First, the governing differential equations for the spatial configuration are presented. Stored energy density function defined with respect to the invariants of the right or left Cauchy–Green deformation tensor and ...

Transversely isotropic magnetoactive elastomers: theory and experiments
Archive of Applied Mechanics, 2020The current contribution is concerned with the development of novel constitutive equations for anisotropic magnetoactive elastomers (MAEs). A hyperelastic material model for an incompressible magnetoelastic medium representing transversely isotropic MAEs has been developed to investigate their response behavior in the presence of the applied magnetic ...

Single-particle mechanism of magnetostriction in magnetoactive elastomers
Physical Review E, 2016Magnetoactive elastomers (MAEs) are composite materials comprised of micrometer-sized ferromagnetic particles in a nonmagnetic elastomer matrix. A single-particle mechanism of magnetostriction in MAEs, assuming the rotation of a soft magnetic, mechanically rigid particle with uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in magnetic fields is identified and considered ...

Large Wiedemann effect in a magnetoactive elastomer
Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 2020Abstract Large twists of a soft tube (hollow cylinder) in helical magnetic fields are presented for the first time. Such a phenomenon is usually denoted as the Wiedemann effect. The tube is fabricated from a soft magnetoactive elastomer material with the shear modulus of about 56 kPa. The composite material comprises 80 mass% of micrometer-sized iron
