Magnetoactive elastomers with controllable radio-absorbing properties

Materials Today Communications, 2019
Abstract Magneto-active elastomers (MAEs) based on a silicon polymer matrix filled with magnetic carbonyl iron microparticles have been synthesized. Both isotropic samples and samples micro-structured by an external magnetic field have been obtained. The radio-absorbing properties of the MAEs have experimentally been studied in the frequency range 2 ...

Temperature blocking and magnetization of magnetoactive elastomers

Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 2019
Abstract The magnetization of a magnetoactive elastomer (MAE) with microparticles of soft magnetic carbonyl iron embedded in a highly elastic matrix has been studied. It is shown that at high temperatures its magnetization curve has the form of a specific hysteresis loop.

Anomalous magnetorheological effect in unstructured magnetoisotropic magnetoactive elastomers

Applied Physics Letters, 2020
It was found that the anomalous magnetorheological effect observed in initially unstructured magnetoisotropic magnetoactive elastomers, i.e., the growth of their effective shear modulus in an external magnetic field by almost two orders of magnitude, is a result of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy induced by the magnetic field.

Motion of ferroparticles inside the polymeric matrix in magnetoactive elastomers

Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, 2008
Ferroelastic composites are smart materials with unique properties including large magnetodeformational effects, strong field enhancement of the elastic modulus and magnetic shape memory. On the basis of mechanical tests, direct microscopy observations and magnetic measurements we conclude that all these effects are caused by reversible motion of the ...

Development of magnetoactive elastomers for sealing eye retina detachments

Journal of Applied Polymer Science, 2018
ABSTRACTMagnetoactive elastomers (MAEs) on the basis of a silicone matrix filled with carbonyl iron microparticles are developed for an envisaged application in eye surgery for treatment of complicated retinal detachments. The proposed magnetic fixator of an eye retina consists of an MAE seal placed inside an eye in the area of a retinal break, and an ...

Model of a Magnetoactive Elastomer with Structure Parameter

Proceedings of the Southwest State University. Series: Engineering and Technology
Purpose. To propose a simple and physically reasonable way to describe basic properties of magnetoactive elastomers under the action of magnetic field and/or mechanical loading.Methods. A phenomenological approach is developed, in the framework of which the aggregation of ferroparticles in a magnetoactive elastomer is interpreted as the appearance of ...

Magnetic anisotropy in magnetoactive elastomers, enabled by matrix elasticity

Polymer, 2019
Abstract Polydimethylsiloxane based magnetoactive elastomers demonstrate above the melting transition range (e.g. at room temperature) an induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, which grows with increasing magnetic field. By freezing a material down to 150 K, displaced iron microparticles are immobilized, so that the magnetic anisotropy can be measured.

Characterization of Tunable Rebound Properties of Microstructured Magnetoactive Elastomers

ASME 2024 Conference on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and Intelligent Systems
Abstract We present a novel method to control the rebounding behavior of small mm-sized solid balls by employing magnetoactive elastomers (MAEs) with microstructured surfaces. An MAE is a composite material consisting of μm-sized ferromagnetic particles dispersed in a soft elastomer (e.g., polydimethylsiloxane) matrix.
