Can Multi-Threaded Flux Tubes in Coronal Arcades Support a Magnetohydrodynamic Avalanche? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities allow energy to be released from stressed magnetic fields, commonly modelled in cylindrical flux tubes linking parallel planes, but, more recently, also in curved arcades containing flux tubes with both footpoints in the same photospheric plane.

Turbulence evolution in MHD plasmas [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Turbulence in the interstellar medium has been an active field of research in the last decade. Numerical simulations are the tool of choice in most cases.

Stationary accretion disks launching super fast-magnetosonic MHD jets [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophys.J. 601 (2004) L139-L142, 2003
We present self-similar models of resistive viscous Keplerian disks driving non-relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) jets becoming super fast-magnetosonic. We show that in order to obtain such solutions, the thermal pressure must be a sizeable fraction of the poloidal magnetic pressure at the Alfven surface.

Studying Interstellar Turbulence Driving Scales using the Bispectrum [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
We demonstrate the utility of the bispectrum, the Fourier three-point correlation function, for studying driving scales of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in the interstellar medium. We calculate the bispectrum by implementing a parallelized Monte Carlo direct measurement method, which we have made publicly available.

Impact of Hall effect on energy decay in magnetohydrodynamic turbulence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
We examine numerically the influence of Hall effect corrections to Ohm's law upon the decay of homogeneous compressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence and conclude that there are no significant differences in global decay rate associated with the Hall ...

A Liquid-Metal Based Spiral Magnetohydrodynamic Micropump

open access: yesMicromachines, 2017
A liquid-metal based spiral magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) micropump is proposed in this work. The micropump was fabricated in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-glass hybrid microfluidic chip.

Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence Formation in Solar Flares: 3D Simulation and Synthetic Observations

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Turbulent plasma motion is common in the universe and invoked in solar flares to drive effective acceleration leading to high-energy electrons. Unresolved mass motions are frequently detected in flares from extreme ultraviolet (EUV) observations, which ...

Propagation speed, linear stability, and ion acceleration in radially imploding Hall-driven electron-magnetohydrodynamic shocks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Plasma density gradients are known to drive magnetic shocks in electron-magnetohydrodynamics (EMHD). Previous slab modeling has been extended to cylindrical modeling of radially imploding shocks. The main new effect of the cylindrical geometry is found to be a radial dependence in the speed of shock propagation.

The $α$ Dynamo Effects in Laboratory Plasmas [PDF]

open access: yesMagnetohydrodynamics 38, 191 (2002), 2001
A concise review of observations of the $\alpha$ dynamo effect in laboratory plasmas is given. Unlike many astrophysical systems, the laboratory pinch plasmas are driven magnetically. When the system is overdriven, the resultant instabilities cause magnetic and flow fields to fluctuate, and their correlation induces electromotive forces along the mean ...
