Stream-aligned Magnetohydrodynamics for Solar Wind Simulations [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2021
Abstract We present a reduced magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) mathematical model describing the dynamical behavior of highly conducting plasmas with frozen-in magnetic fields, constrained by the assumption that there exists a frame of reference, where the magnetic field vector,

Inferring the Magnetic Field from the Rayleigh–Taylor Instability

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
By extending the potential approach of Layzer and Goncharov to the magnetohydrodynamics equations, we find the nonlinear solutions to the single-mode Rayleigh–Taylor instability subjected to uniform magnetic fields at various inclinations. This allows us

Magnetohydrodynamic Simulations of the Supernova Remnant G1.9+0.3

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
The youngest Galactic supernova remnant G1.9+0.3 shows a discrete feature between its radio and X-ray morphologies. The observed radio morphology features a single maximum in the north, while the X-ray observation shows two opposite “ears” on the east ...

Global MHD Simulations of the Time-dependent Corona

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
We describe, test, and apply a technique to incorporate full-Sun, surface flux evolution into an MHD model of the global solar corona. Requiring only maps of the evolving surface flux, our method is similar to that of Lionello et al., but we introduce ...

RADIATIVE MAGNETOHYDRODYNAMIC SIMULATION OF SUNSPOT STRUCTURE [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2009
Results of a three-dimensional MHD simulation of a sunspot with a photospheric size of about 20 Mm are presented. The simulation has been carried out with the MURaM code, which includes a realistic equation of state with partial ionization and radiative transfer along many ray directions.

Rotation in Event Horizon Telescope Movies

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has produced images of M87* and Sagittarius A*, and will soon produce time sequences of images, or movies. In anticipation of this, we describe a technique to measure the rotation rate, or pattern speed Ω _p , from ...

The Athena++ Adaptive Mesh Refinement Framework: Multigrid Solvers for Self-gravity

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, 2023
We describe the implementation of multigrid solvers in the Athena++ adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) framework and their application to the solution of the Poisson equation for self-gravity.

Influence of Crustal Magnetic Fields on Horizontal Plasma Transport and Ion Escape on Mars

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Owing to its unevenly distributed crustal fields, Mars acts as a unique obstacle to the solar wind. In the presence of the crustal fields, the transport of the planetary ions on the dayside ionosphere exhibits north–south asymmetry.

Simulations of Incompressible Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2001
We simulate incompressible MHD turbulence using a pseudospectral code. Our major conclusions are: (1) MHD turbulence is most conveniently described in terms of counterpropagating shear Alfven and slow waves. Shear Alfven waves control the cascade dynamics. Slow waves play a passive role and adopt the spectrum set by the shear Alfven waves.

The Generation and Dissipation of Interstellar Turbulence - Results from Large Scale High Resolution Simulations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We study, by means of adaptive mesh refinement hydro- and magnetohydrodynamical simulations that cover a wide range of scales (from kpc to sub-parsec), the dimension of the most dissipative structures and the injection scale of the turbulent interstellar
