Separating Environmental Modulation From Source Intermittency in Methane Leakage From a Legacy Well in British Columbia

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
Abstract Legacy oil and gas wells are an incompletely quantified source of greenhouse gas emissions and offer leakage pathways for subsurface gas migration if inadequately isolated. We present a high‐resolution, process‐based characterization of leakage dynamics at an integrity‐compromised legacy gas well in northeastern British Columbia using five ...

Magnetic Imaging of the Effect of Stress on the Remanent Magnetization of Basalt

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 19, 16 October 2026.
Abstract Differential compressional stresses (<100 MPa) that do not result in permanent deformation have traditionally been considered insufficient to modify paleomagnetic signals; however, recent numerical predictions have challenged this assumption.

Field Use of a Magnetometer

open access: yes
This field activity builds upon the previous activity (Magnet as a Magnetometer) and provides students with first-hand use of a real magnetometer. The teacher will bury iron objects outdoors and have the students mark the area with a survey grid.

The Evolution of Parallel Electric Field Across the Earth's Magnetosheath

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 19, 16 October 2026.
Abstract In Earth's collisionless magnetosheath, turbulence evolution and energy transformation across the system, especially at kinetic scales, remain poorly quantified without full‐coverage of high‐resolution observations. Using multi‐traversal observations from the 2023 and 2024 Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) Unbiased Magnetosheath Campaign, we ...

Drift‐Resonance Driven by Field Line Resonance Gradients: A Mechanism for Non‐Dispersive Microinjection Events

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 19, 16 October 2026.
Abstract Ultra‐low‐frequency waves in the magnetosphere often produce field line resonances with strong spatial gradients in wave amplitude. We analyze a form of drift resonance driven by these gradients near the resonant field line. This mechanism differs fundamentally from conventional gradient‐ and curvature‐driven drift resonance and predicts an ...

Unusual Enhancement in He(23S) Airglow Brightness Associated With Interplanetary Magnetic Field Northward Turnings During the 2025 New Year's Day Storm

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 19, 16 October 2026.
Abstract The upper thermosphere is important in the context of space weather, but continuous monitoring of the thermosphere at high latitudes remains limited despite its strong variations associated with geomagnetic activity. Orthohelium, He(23S), is found from the upper thermosphere to lower exosphere, and is a promising tracer of atmospheric dynamics.
