Magnetopause reconnection rate

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1974
Discussion of certain aspects of the magnetic field reconnection process at the magnetopause. It is argued that the upper limits on reconnection derived by Petschek (1964), on the one hand, and Yeh and Axford (1970) and Sonnerup (1970), on the other, may be reconciled, at least qualitatively.

Ionospheric Signatures of Magnetopause Processes

1998
Whilst it is well-accepted that short-duration changes to the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) and solar wind cause high-latitude ionospheric transients observed by magnetic, optical and radar techniques, a coherent explanation of the zoo of signatures remains illusive.

Demarcating the magnetopause boundary

Reviews of Geophysics, 1995
Determining the shape of the magnetopause is one of the oldest problems in space physics and one of its earliest success stories. Chapman and Ferraro [1931] were the first to recognize that the Earth's magnetic field carves out a cavity in the oncoming solar wind.

Polar Magnetopause Distance

1974
The distance from Earth to the magnetopause at very high latitudes has been measured on the HEOS-2 satellite. The wave experiment on this satellite measures magnetic and electric signals at five frequencies between 20 and 236 Hz. The transition from the magnetosphere into the sheath region is clearly indicated in these signals.

The electrostatic field at the magnetopause

Planetary and Space Science, 1970
Abstract The discharge through the magnetosphere-ionosphere circuit of the electrostatic field at the magnetopause is examined quantitatively using an idealized circuit analogue. The two geomagnetic flux tubes linking the magnetopause to the ionosphere are treated as uniform transmission lines and the magnetopause and ionosphere are regarded as ...

Predictability of Magnetopause Location

Understanding the dynamics and predictability of magnetopause location is crucial for space weather forecasting and the safeguarding of critical technological infrastructure. The first part of the talk surveys previous effort in development of magnetopause models that gradually involve more and more driving parameters, starting from solar wind dynamic ...
